We Need to Calm Down

The BC wine industry continues to mature at a rapid rate. The proliferation of sub-regions, interest from the world abroad and experience are all factors. In short, there are more stories to tell, be they about wines, people or place, and we have some below. If you are heading into wine country to explore the latest in BC, show a little maturity yourself. Make an appointment, keep your distance, wear a mask, and when you can't as Dr. Bonnie would implore: be kind, be calm and be safe. ~Anthony

VIDEO: BARCLAY ROBINSON JOINS ROAD 13

Road 13 Vineyards is currently undergoing a complete transformation in the vineyards, at the winery and in the bottle. We caught up with the newly arrived winemaker Barclay Robinson and Joe Luckhurst, a founding family member, to talk about next directions.

VIDEO: DIGGING FOR ANSWERS

Michael Bartier connects soil to the minerality in his wines. Among other descriptors it's sometimes referred to as electricity, and it's controversial with some.

SUMMER WINES THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK

We feature a number of wines made for summer that are pure fun to drink and don't cost an arm and leg, for all the readers who have asked.

CHEESE: BUCHEVRETTE

This lovely small goat log from Ferme Floralpe (Papineauville, Quebec) may be a common-looking style of goat cheese, but looks can be deceiving.

TOP TEN: WINES ON SALE

We selected ten wines sold in BC Liquor Stores that impressed over the last year and that have now thankfully had their price reduced.

WHAT WE'RE DRINKING

ANTHONY

89/100
Boutinot
Les Coteaux Côtes du Rhone Villages 2017
Côtes du Rhône Villages, Southern Rhone, France
Boutinot puts a twist on the common Côtes du Rhône practice to bottle the best cuvées as a single, named, village wine and the rest as more basic Côtes du Rhône Villages. What they like to do is source wine from the named village vineyards and enhance them with a small proportion of barrel-aged wine from Sablet, Séguret and Cairanne. Les Coteaux is a mix of the best grenache noir and syrah from some of the 17 named Côtes du Rhône Villages. The style is soft and charming, the fruit a subtle mix of sweet spices, oak and peppery, smoky, savoury black raspberry and licorice fruit—the perfect summer barbecue red.

TREVE

89/100
Niepoort
Dialogo Douro Branco 2018
Douro Valley, Northern Portugal
This youthful white may show a comic on the label, but make no mistake, this is a serious wine, from one of the world's top winemakers, Dirk Niepoort. Tight with green apple and green fig, citrus, sour melon, lees, lemon thistle, meadow grass and a wash of fine salts, finishing with a lips making lemony acidity. So smashable, and such a fantastic price (especially in ON).

Bartier Bros.
Semillon 2019
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia
This is wine I want to sip endlessly in the summer - with a picnic of cheese and baguette, with briny chilled oysters, or with a smoky grilled pork chop. It's real, it's authentic, it's quintessentially South Okanagan, and it's thoroughly delicious.

90/100
Clos du Soleil
Winemaker's Series Pinot Gris
Keremeos, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia
From Whispered Secret Vineyard in Keremeos, this pinot gris is made in a restrained, lightly aromatic style that balances bright citrus and tree fruits alongside a subtle touch of wood. There’s a lovely richness and concentration to the palate, while still retaining a tension and precision that is difficult to achieve with pinot gris, which is what sets this apart. Great value.

REAL WINE

WHAT IS
REAL WINE?
Monastero Suore Cistercensi
Coenobium
Lazio, Italy
This is not your typical Italian white wine. Unless, that is, you usually take of natural wine made by nuns. In the case of Coenobium, it's grown and raised by the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, under the guidance of Giampiero Bea, son of one of Italy's most prominent non-interventionist wine producers, Paulo Bea. Trebbiano, malvasia, verdicchio from Lazio's volcanic soils was native fermented and with one week of skin contact before a short rest and being bottled unfined and unfiltered (and with minimal sulphur at bottling). Almond, chamomile, Asian pear rides a gentle, slender palate, washed with salinity and finishing with a lingering elderflower.
