The 5 Steps to create Resilient Kids

I can’t remove challenge or hurt from my daughter’s life. I’d love to buffer her from disappointment and pain and loss, but these things happen to us all! Rather it’s my job, as a parent and educator to stand by her side when she stumbles and help her exercise her muscles of resilience.

Every challenge she faces is a chance to develop the skills she will need to truly flourish. That way I know she will cope, and not break, when I am not there beside her.

While we all want to raise our children with the belief that their future is bright and full of happiness, to flourish in life they need to be equipped for struggle and challenge.

Resilience is (definitely) the new black!

With the world lurching from the norm on all fronts, everyone is talking “resilience.” Many people define resilience as the ability to “bounce back”, but it’s much more than that.

Resilience is the ability to keep your head together, manage any tricky feelings and successfully adapt to the challenges faced. While some crumble, withdraw or lash-out in the face of adversity, a resilient child has an I can work this out attitude and a skill set to stay curious and solve the problems at hand.

Resilience can’t be taught: but it can be nurtured

You can’t teach resilience and it is not simply genetically endowed (Luthar et al., 2000.) Rather, resilience needs to nurtured in individuals and collectively shared across families, communities and classrooms. Research has identified 5 key ways that we can support out children to become more resilient: Working together we truly can foster a generation of resilient kids!
