Hi <<First Name>>,

Grace and peace to you amidst the turbulence of Covid and election year politics. We wanted to shoot out a quick update before we head to Bush Orientation this week.

We just hit the 6 month mark of our time here in PNG. Lots of adjustments, but happy to be here. Check out our timeline below:

For the past two months, we have been helping with center operations here at the Madang Center. This involves things like serving as the primary point of contact for our PNG friends who are employed by the mission and who help with housing repairs, cutting grass, cleaning guest houses, and nighttime security. It also involves airport runs, buying supplies in town, and helping coordinate a couple projects. In the realm of missions, I'm not sure the Church quite understands or appreciates all the very practical, logistical maneuverings that are necessary to launch and sustain healthy church planting teams amongst some of the least reached people groups of the world. There are some striking parallels between military and missionary life, and one of them is the need for a healthy support infrastructure. I used to be a supply officer in the Marine Corps, so I have a wholesome respect for the sometimes thankless work that goes on behind the "glory" of the frontlines (i.e. infantry or church planting).
We personally are blessed with a much-needed stateside support platform --> YOU! Thanks so much for your prayers and support!! Privileged to be in this together with you guys!

It's been a real treat to get to regularly sit down with our PNG friends/workers and listen through Course 1 of Foundational Bible Teaching, called "Planim Pos". A veteran missionary, who is also a gifted teacher and excellent speaker of Tok Pisin, has pre-recorded all of the 68 lessons (about 20min each). Sometimes we have a bit of discussion afterwards, where the main points of the lesson can be emphasized. Usually, it's always best to have a live teacher, but Jonathan has not reached Capable High in pidgin English yet.  This Creation-to-Christ foundational teaching approach is a trademark of Ethnos360/NTMPNG; it is very thorough and spends significant time in Genesis. We learn so much about God through His actions and interactions with man. We are about 1/3 of the way through the lessons. Please pray for the hearts and minds of those in attendance (3 different groups).

What's next?

Well, in two days, we head to Bush Orientation, which will be our last requirement for e2 (Equipping, phase 2). For the next 5 weeks (27 July --> 1 Sept), we will be living on Gasmata island alongside the Martin family, who have been the primary church planters amongst the Akolet people group (about 4,000 in number). The Martins and their co-workers started the work in 2006, but their co-workers had to leave for medical reasons. The Phase 1 teaching was completed in 2011, and the Akolet church was born. The New Testament translation is currently 37% complete. There are no appointed elders yet, but 3 Akolet men are handling all the Bible teaching, which includes writing their own lessons. They are currently studying through 1 and 2 Peter, for the first time.

We look forward to engaging with the believers (and non-believers), with the Martins, and with continued language (pidgin English) and culture study. We are not there to learn the Akolet language, but we are there to better understand what bush life will look like for our family, as we continue to seek to become useful and relevant instruments that God can use in PNG. Our next update will certainly cover our time on Gasmata island, but between now and then we will have limited connectivity.

Itinerary for Bush Orientation: Madang to southern West New Britain
"Home Sweet Home" for the next 5 weeks.
Walking somewhere...
Visited a small island with some friends.
Got to sit in on some translation checking of the book of Luke into the Inapang language.
Helping lead worship on Sundays at the Madang Center.

After Bush Orientation...

We have committed to helping out with Madang Center operations for at least another 2 months.

We are continuing to have conversations with a couple families that we think would be great co-workers, as we trust God to knit together our team and to guide us toward the people group He has marked for us.

What a creative God we have! They call this tree "klangid". It insists on growing directly into stone, near where the salt water splashes onto the rocks. In fact, if you try to transplant it into "good" soil, it doesn't do as well. Klangid wood is known to be exceptionally strong and hard. Crazy.
Speaking of crazy trees!
Specific Prayer Points:
  • Future teammates
  • Future people group
  • Bush Orientation (27 July - 1 Sept)
  • Planim Pos audio lessons
  • To love God, love others, and impact His world  :-)

Love you guys,
