Museums Assistance Program Emergency Assistance has been updated
The Canadian Heritage portal for Museums Assistance Program Emergency Assistance has been updated to accept applications from small museums with budgets between $2,000 and $10,000.

Note that the changes to the portal and their web site pages are now live. Essentially, they added two brackets for the under $10K organizations. Funding amounts, to eligible organizations, will range from $1,000 to a maximum of $100,000. The amount will be determined by a formula based on the organization’s 2019 expenses (or last completed fiscal year).

The formula is as follows:

  • For annual expenses between $2,000 and $4,999: fixed funding amount of $1,000
  • For annual expenses between $5,000 and $9,999: fixed funding amount of $2,000
  • For annual expenses between $10,000 and $50,000: fixed funding amount of $5,000
  • For annual expenses between $50,001 and $100,000: fixed funding amount of $10,000
  • For annual expenses between $100,001 and $3,000,000: variable amount equivalent to 10% of annual expenses up to a maximum of $100,000

Nipawin Living Forestry Museum re-opening at reduced hours
As museums in northeast Saskatchewan made their decisions on whether to re-open or not, the Nipawin Living Forestry Museum were one of the last to make their call.

Museums in Saskatchewan could re-open on June 29 as part of Phase four of Re-Open Saskatchewan, but the Nipawin Living Forestry Museum’s first day back will be on Thursday, July 16.

“We’re going to slowly open up and see how much traffic we get going through, to see whether it’s worth opening up a little bit more or not,” Ferd Roualt, the museum’s president told northeastNOW. “We haven’t hired any summer students, so it’ll be a little bit tougher to stay open.” Read the full article...

The first days: northeast and area museums that re-opened and remained closed
Museums could resume operations on June 29 as part of Phase Four of Re-Open Saskatchewan, but not every community’s history gatekeeper were ready to re-open.

In Nipawin and Tisdale, both museums remain closed. On Wednesday, July 8, the Tisdale and District Museum announced they would remain closed until further notice. Meanwhile, the Nipawin and District Living Forestry Museum remains temporarily closed but will decide within the upcoming two weeks on whether they’ll re-open for the summer or not. Call for Proposals for the 2020 CRKN Conference

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is pleased to announce a call for proposals for sessions at the 2020 CRKN Conference. The conference will be held virtually during the month of October as a series of webinars, panels, discussions, and social activities to be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

This has been a year of unprecedented transition for the research community. Our conference will build upon this shift with the theme “Access in Transition.” How is your organization or community defining access? How are you providing innovative ways to access collections now and in the future? How is access being reconceptualized at your organization?

We invite abstracts on topics including, but not limited to:
  • Collaborative efforts for access
  • The future of open access and open science
  • Data-driven collections analysis
  • Indigenous perspectives on library and GLAM practices
  • Decentralized service and remote access
  • Digitization strategies
  • Preservation of heritage content
  • Copyright and rights statements for heritage content

Presentations may take the form of:
  • 25-minute presentations
  • 45-minute panel sessions
  • 10-minute lightning talks
  • Other session types that work well for an online audience - let us know your ideas! (For example, Twitter meet-ups, poster sessions, interactive demonstrations)

Proposals should include a 250-word abstract for your presentation or panel and a 100-word speaker biography for each speaker. Please submit your proposals using this form by Friday, July 31, 2020 at 5 p.m. ET. All proposals will be considered, and final recommendations will be made by the CRKN Conference Planning Committee for approval by the CRKN Board of Directors. The conference will also include sessions curated by CRKN, as well as CRKN business sessions and the CRKN Annual General Meeting.

Conference Accessibility and Inclusivity
CRKN is committed to hosting a safe and inclusive online event. Click here to read our Conference Code of Conduct.

CRKN is happy to work with applicants who require assistance submitting their proposal or who have questions about the application process. Please contact Francesca Brzezicki at fbrzezicki@crkn.ca or 613-907-7028.

Registration for the 2020 CRKN Conference will be free of charge due to the exceptional circumstances faced by Canadians and the global community this year. We invite all levels of participation from those interested in attending any of the conference sessions.

Upcoming Fall Classes in Heritage Resources Management at Athabasca University
Athabasca University’s fall semester graduate classes are open for general registration to all students and prospective students holding an undergraduate degree. Upcoming classes include HERM 542 and HERM 672 in paced form, and HERM 512 in unpaced continuous enrolment format. Details are as follows:

HERM 542: Issues in Planning Historic Places: This course is a detailed examination of planning options and approaches for historic places. Students will gain advanced skills in managing and structuring planning efforts for a variety of types of circumstances; learn how to define appropriate use for buildings, landscapes, and other resources in terms of broader preservation, economic, social, and interpretative needs; and learn how the planning of historic places is shaped by broader cultural and economic contexts and the existing built environment.

HERM 672: Heritage and Risk Management: This course focuses on the measures and actions that cultural heritage professionals should undertake before, during, and after a disaster. It discusses cultural heritage in the context of disaster and complex emergency situations. The course also discusses how different types of disasters impact cultural heritage resources and how cultural values could be compromised during crises and disasters, through a series of case studies. Students learn about the ways to assess and evaluate different risks to cultural heritage in times of natural and man-made disasters and develop preparedness and preventive measures to reduce risks. HERM 672 examines existing international, national, and local frameworks for the protection of cultural heritage. The course also explores how cultural heritage, as a target in disasters and armed conflict, can become a driver for resilience and potentially contribute to disaster risk reduction and disaster recovery.v

HERM 512: Advanced Methods in Heritage Research: This course provides advanced skills in applying heritage resource management research methodologies through readings, discussion and applied projects. Students concentrate on archival and library research, oral history research, and research using material culture. Students gain analytical and practical skills in using these types of sources as part of developing and applying a research strategy. Formal skills in writing, planning, structuring, and referencing written reports will be dealt with throughout the course.

Note that the registration deadline for HERM 542 and 672 is on August 8th and classes run Sept 8th to Dec 18th. HERM 512 is open for continuous enrollment and may be started any month throughout the year. For registration procedure details, please see our graduate program web page or contact the office.

CMS Guidelines
The Canadian Heritage Information Network is pleased to announce the publication of two new resources developed with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative. Guidelines for choosing a collections management system and the Collections management system criteria checklist (CMSCC) assist heritage institutions in selecting a new collections management system (CMS).

The Guidelines for choosing a collections management system resource includes:

·         a list of recommended steps that institutions can take when selecting a CMS

·         an institutional questionnaire to help specify needs

·         a vendor questionnaire to identify the criteria that they meet

The CMSCC has been updated and is partially aligned with Spectrum. It includes an abridged list intended for institutions with less complex information management needs.

Both resources provide a starting point for any institution going through a CMS selection process.
