Hello Friends!
A few weeks ago, we shared updates on our work restoring the Kaloleni branch of the McMillan Memorial Library, and are now heartened to share an accompanying album of images for your enjoyment. Very many thanks, to all of you writing in with such kind words of encouragement! You can now watch some highlights of this transformation from the beginning.
The #UbuntuLoveChallenge: We accept!
A few weeks ago, we were invited by the International Publishers Association's Vice President Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi to participate in the #UbuntuLoveChallenge, a global movement built on the core philosophy of Ubuntu (human interconnectedness) with a mission to restore hope through a worldwide display of human collaboration and appreciation.
With school closures now extended to January 2021, we accepted this challenge by extending library resources to homes around the Kaloleni Library where users, mostly children, face barriers to digital learning at a time when public libraries remain closed due to COVID19-mandated measures.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Text Book Centre, Isons Group and our individual donors Teresa Mbagaya and Godfrey Munira, whose support enabled us to distribute these packs to 200 households last week!  We hope to do a second round in August targeted at the homes we couldn't reach with this first round, followed by a third round in Makadara in September.

We welcome cash and in-kind support towards this.

Phase 2 of Kaloleni Library's Restoration: What We Need
The second phase of Kaloleni Library's restoration is currently underway. We are grateful to Top Tank and Rebecca Zook for the donations towards our rainwater harvesting system installation. We are very nearly there  there - just need a few more things!
1. High-speed Internet

We seek partnerships with local internet service providers to get this library connected. The newly renovated space will accommodate up to 66 users at one go, all of whom require Wi-Fi.  Help us, please.

2. Library Management System

We seek a partner to work with us in developing a digital library management system compatible with the most user-friendly and locally serviced operating systems. Please respond to our  Request for Proposals. Submission deadline is August 14th 2020.
3. Book Donations

In 2019, we spent 9 months creating a catalogue of books domiciled at these libraries. We are being deliberate about acquisitions and donations, with a particular lean towards items requested by library users, a list of which forms our curated wish list, with a bias for African content.

4. Your Voice

How do you say Welcome to the Library in your language? We are translating this phrase to as many of Kenya's languages as we can, so you can feel at home at the Kaloleni Library wherever you are from! These translations will be displayed at the library.

Help us translate: Welcome to the Library.
And finally, have you heard?...
Our Co-Founder Wanjiru Koinange's debut novel, The Havoc of Choice is now finally available in Nairobi! Purchase it via branches of Text Book Centre countrywide, or their online shop. Happy reading!
Until next week, keep warm and stay safe!
