From the Principal's Desk
Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3, I hope that the break has allowed all members of our community to recharge and prepare themselves for the busy term ahead. There are a number of significant events that take place this term, some of which I have outlined below. I would like to start by thanking our Year 12 students for their help and support this week. On Thursday we hosted the Year 10 students from MacKillop College and Regional College to give them the opportunity to see, firsthand, the subject choices and facilities that our College has to offer and help them make the most appropriate decision about their Higher School Certificate (HSC) pathway. Quite simply, the Year 12’s were outstanding and we are very proud of the way that they represented and showcased their College to the visiting staff and students.
Virtual Open Night
The visits from our St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools Year 10 students are timed to occur the week before our Enrolment Open Night each year. Traditionally, the Enrolment Open Night is an opportunity for Year 10 students and their families to explore the facilities and opportunities that are available to all students across our region. Given the circumstances of 2020, we have had to consider alternatives to having large gatherings of people, so for the first time our Enrolment Open Night will be Online. Anyone considering enrolling at our College is asked to register at newmancollege.live and join our Virtual Open Night 6.00pm on Tuesday 28 July. From the comfort of your own home, you can learn more about our course offerings and facilities, and about the enrolment process. From the site you can book your enrolment interview (bookings open at 6.00pm on Tuesday). Please don’t hesitate to contact the College Office if you have any queries about the Virtual Enrolment Open Night or the enrolment process in general.
Trial Higher School Certificate Examinations
The Year 12 students have now begun their final term of formal classes. In Week 5, the Trial HSC Examinations will begin as has been outlined in previous editions of the newsletter. It is imperative that all students and families ensure that all matters relating to a successful completion of the Trial Examinations and all HSC matters take priority at this time. Under no circumstance should students be taking time out of school to attend to non-school related issues.
Preliminary HSC
It is also a significant time for our Year 11 cohort who have now embarked on their final term of the Preliminary HSC. This means that all competencies, classwork and assessments for the Preliminary stage of the HSC must be completed by the end of this term. In Week 10, all Year 11 students will sit the Preliminary HSC exams which will mark the end of Year 11. When students return in Term 4 they will commence Term 1 of the Year 12 Higher School Certificate.

Assistant Principal's Message - Learning & Teaching
Hello and Welcome to Term 3.
Term 3 started with a very busy staff professional development day where all staff were involved in numerous meetings, mostly with a focus on Pedagogy, "the way in which we teach". These meetings had many robust conversations and I was pleased to see many positive outcomes starting to emerge from the day.
The start of the term signifies a busy time at the College in regards to assessments and exams. In Weeks 5 and 6 Year 12 will sit their Trial HSC exams and Year 11 will have their assessment period at the end of the term.
On Thursday the Year 10 students from MacKillop College and St Joseph Regional College visited our site as many of them consider making the change to Newman for Years 11 and 12. It was very satisfying to see how the Year 12 tour guides and volunteers welcomed the visitors and participated in great displays. The visiting group of teachers were very complimentary on the behaviour and skills displayed by our Year 12's. Thank you to all the Year 12 students involved for your time and the leadership which you showed.
We have recently welcomed Mrs Sue Leahy and Mr Wayne Ulrich onto our staff. On behalf of the wider Newman College community, I would like to wish both of them all the best as they begin with us.

Student Services News
Hi Newman family and welcome back to Term 3. I hope that you all had a wonderful and restful break, and returned fresh ready for what shapes as a very busy term.
Year 12 students continue to gather momentum as they count down to the final weeks of their educational experience at Newman College. With their Trial HSC exams in Week 5 and 6, retreat in Week 8, it certainly seems like a busy final few weeks for Year 12.
Year 11 recommence their Workplace Learning Program this week and already there has been several outstanding reports and positive feedback from employers. Keep up the great work Year 11 and continue the outstanding representation of yourself and the College as you move into your block week in Week 3 of this term.
This week Newman College hosted MacKillop College and Regional College Year 10 students as they prepare to make decisions about their future educational pathways. Our fantastic Year 12 students were actively involved in tours, display lessons and hosting of the two schools. They displayed leadership and qualities beyond their years. Well done to all students involved. Truly awesome.

Bits & Bytes - Information Technology News
Although this academic year has been very different to others, students in Information Technology have enjoyed and experienced a range of achievements.
Year 11 have completed the hardware of computer systems module, culminating in a series disassembly/reassembly of a personal computer speed competitions. Currently, students are completing a website assessment item with the theme of a website for an Australian tourism destination. The software chosen to produce this is Wordpress, as this is currently the world’s most popular platform for website creation.
Year 12 have been completing 2D animation project work using Adobe Animate CC. The Specialisation class has been extending this experience creating 3D animation projects using Blender. The Year 12 Specialisation class members presented to the visiting Year 10 students on Thursday. I was very proud of their enthusiasm and efforts in reflecting on their experiences in the Information Technology subjects at Newman.

Workplacement News
Last semester saw the unfortunate slowing down of our Workplace Learning Program due to the impact of COVID-19, so it was exciting to see many of our Year 12 students recommencing this towards the end of Term Two.
One of these students was Alysha Campbell. Alysha is currently undertaking a Retail placement at Your Discount Chemist, in which she is gaining skills in customer service, teamwork and task prioritisation. Also an excellent Human Services student, Alysha has been able to consolidate her knowledge of infection control and its role in protecting staff and clients.
During a pandemic, pharmacy staff are at an increased health risk as they tend to be the first point of contact for people requiring health advice and medication. It is therefore crucial to implement practices such as frequent environmental cleaning, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
Alysha, you are a quiet achiever in a noisy world. Newman congratulates you on your outstanding efforts at Your Discount Chemist and wishes you all the best for the remainder of your placement.

The Pathways & Careers Team News
Year 11
Congratulations to Year 11 who have successfully recommenced Workplace Learning this week. A few reminders regarding Thursdays;
- If you cannot attend workplacement the employer must be contacted by the student and the College contacted by the parent/guardian in a timely manner. A text will be sent home every Thursday.
- Please ensure students are getting their diaries signed at the end of each workplacement day by the employer to record hours.
- Any questions please contact your PC/IBL Teacher or myself.
Block week for Year 11 will be 3 to 7 August. Attendance at workplacement is required every day of this week.
Year 12
Year 12 continues with Workplace Learning on Wednesdays. This is a very important time for Year 12 to gain valuable work experience and perhaps secure an opportunity for when they finish their schooling.
2021 Scholarships
Following is scholarship information which may be of interest for students considering study in 2021.
Scholarships of up to $6,000 for full-time study or $3,000 for part-time study are available. There is no limit on the types of courses that qualify or the age of the applicant. Courses may be undertaken at University, TAFE or VET courses, on campus or by distance learning. Applicants all have one thing in common - a desire to play an active part in the future of rural NSW.

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through what is on your mind or what is going on in your life. Through talking and getting things out, you are often able to find some clarity for your concerns. In this current situation it may be helpful to talk about what is happening for you.
Everything in the counselling session is kept private and confidential, however if we believe you are going to cause harm to yourself, or someone else or could be involved in a highly illegal activity, our counsellor or teachers are mandated to report.
Students are able to fill out a referral form or your teacher can help you with this and the counsellor will make contact with you. The referral form is located on the Newman Moodle website (see link below).
