Hey, Lakeland. LALtoday intern Phoenix here. 👋 As a self-proclaimed foodie and amateur chef, I am always on the hunt for new + exciting international dishes. If you’re like me, I often find myself visiting local and internationally diverse grocery stores + whipping up recipes...but sometimes the ingredients and techniques can get a bit overwhelming.
Fortunately, Lakeland is the perfect place to experience a world via international cuisine, no assembly required.
With your help, we’ve compiled a list of 20+ authentic restaurants and food vendors from six global regions that we hope will inspire you to venture into a new world of global fare while supporting our local businesses. If you know of a place we missed, let us know.

○ Sip, sip hooray. The Yard On Mass (802 N. Massachusetts Ave.) reopens today – at 4 p.m., specifically. There will be live music this weekend + a food truck lineup, including K&E Italian kitchen, Smokin' Chanchos + Off The Griddle. The backyard party venue was able to reopen after obtaining its own food truck (recently patron-named “Mass Consumption”), which will have a rotating lineup of local chefs.
○ Local athletes began practicing on Wednesday – starting up the first practice day of the season. July 27 was supposed to be the initial day of practice but was pushed back due to COVID-19. Football players must have five days of practice before donning pads during practice, meaning that players won’t be in pads until next Wednesday. Most schools will host their first games on Sept. 11, giving players a little over a week to practice in pads. (The Ledger)
○ Gov. Ron DeSantis has applied to increase Florida unemployment benefits through The Lost Wages Assistance Program – a federal unemployment assistance program – by $300 per week. Benefits will be retroactive Aug. 1 (once approved) and will become available for those who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. FL’s current unemployment has a cap of $275. (Click Orlando)
○ Two asymptomatic Polk County students – that were awaiting COVID-19 test results – attended their corresponding schools (Haines City’s Boone Middle School + Bartow High’s Summerlin Academy), earlier this week. Both students tested positive, prompting Superintendent Byrd to remind parents + students to be honest about circumstances, as the schools will make learning style adjustments as needed. (The Ledger)
○ Florida has dropped behind Texas as a coronavirus hot spot – now making the Sunshine State no. 3 in COVID-19 cases. California still leads the US. FL previously was no. 2 mid-July, as cases in the state increased, while NY’s held steady. (The Palm Beach Post)
○ Coronavirus testing is down in the US – including in FL. Health experts haven’t determined why testing has declined, but warn that it could impact contact tracing + other methods to curb the virus. Some speculate that testing may be down to previous testing wait times. (Tampa Bay Times)
○ On Thursday, the Florida Department of Health announced 611,991 new cases of COVID-19 and 139 additional deaths in Florida. That brings the total number of cases in FL of COVID-19 to 611,999 + the total deaths to 11,011. You can find more updates on the Florida Department of Health dashboard. See Lakeland numbers here. ○ Recommended guidelines for retail and service employees from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce workplace violence include measures like advertising COVID-19 related policies + not arguing with a customer if they “make threats or become violent.” The CDC’s guidance is in response to an increase in violent events across the country due to mask mandates. There are presently 30 states in the US that require face coverings in public. (WESH 2 News)

Earlier this week, Lakeland-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hurricane Hunters dove into the Gulf of Mexico to help gather life-saving data about Hurricane Laura.
With the ongoing pandemic, crew members get tested twice a week for COVID-19. Other precautions being taken include no crew-to-crew contact + working in cohorts to prevent transmission.

○ The Every Blue Cart Makes a Difference campaign has committed over 5,000 Lakelanders to use plastic bag-free recycling carts + place a sticker on their carts to show their support. Through the campaign, the City of Lakeland’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division aims to keep bagged recyclable and plastic wrapping out of recycling carts, flatten cardboard + other efficient measures. Recent findings from a recycling audit found a decrease in recycling contamination by over 60% when compared to 2018. ♻️

○ $15.1 million. That’s roughly how much a 222,134 sq. ft. speculative warehouse and distribution center in Lakeland (on Drane Field Rd.) has sold for to an unnamed tenant. The space will be home to a regional distribution center. (Patch)

○ The Polk County Sheriff's Office is seeking to hire substitute crossing guards in Lakeland, Bartow, and Fort Meade. Substitutes must have one hour of availability in the mornings and 30 minutes in the afternoons. Those interested in applying for the position should contact 863.534.7300 ext. 108.

○ The Florida Department of Health’s new rules for the Office of Medical Marijuana Use will now allow the state’s licensed dispensaries to develop + sell THC edibles. The rules further outline that legal edibles must be in the form of baked goods, lozenges, gelatins, chocolates, and drink powders. Candies will not be permitted. 🌿 (WESH 2 News)

○ 6.2%-7.1%. In Hillsborough + Pinellas counties and the Lakeland submarket, that’s the percentage of vacant industrial space, according to commercial real estate updates by Business Observer. Of the three, Lakeland has the highest rate at 7.1%. (Business Observer)
