Outdoor Education in the Time of COVID: Recorded Event
CCCN’s Director of Cities Monica Lopez Magee joined New Mexico in Focus for a Facebook Live event on Friday, July 24 to discuss outdoor learning and using outdoor spaces as part of school reopening strategies.
Schools Beat Earlier Plagues with Outdoor Classrooms
As schools across the country plan the new school year amidst COVID-19, many are promoting outdoor classrooms as a viable solution. Children & Nature Network’s Executive Director Sarah Milligan-Toffler is quoted in this New York Times article showing historical evidence of successful outdoor classrooms during previous pandemics.
National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative
The new National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative brings together working groups across the country to devise guidance for school districts to repurpose outdoor spaces as a cost-effective way to help schools reopen safely. CCCN city team members from Austin, Grand Rapids, Baltimore and San Francisco are members of the Early Adopters working group.

Houston’s Educational Video Promotes Nearby Nature
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Houston Community Partnerships and Engagement Program proudly presents 'Who is Living Here?' featuring CCCN Houston team member Kelli Ondracek from Houston’s Parks and Recreation Department. Kelli explains the importance of native trees and wildlife in this educational and fun video.
Park and Recreation Month in July honors professionals essential to communities
This month the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) launched a campaign to celebrate the way parks and recreation professionals have pivoted to meet the needs of their communities. CCCN joined the NRPA campaign to thank the many parks & rec staff who are critical members of their CCCN city teams. Follow #citykids2nature to learn more.
