African Americans have used mutual aid and cooperatives for both survival and to gain economic well-being and independence in the face of racial discrimination and economic marginalization. Practices such as the pooling of resources and collective decision-making, to produce goods and services accessible and beneficial to the community, have been practiced throughout history.

Join UEDA and Walnut Way Conservation Corp. as we jointly welcome professor, historian, economist and author of Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice, Jessica Gordon-Nembhard, Ph.D. to discuss this legacy and more with Milwaukee's Lindsay Heights resident, Emonia Barnett.

Using a discussion format, the two will lead attendees in an informational presentation and discussion on the history of cooperative ownership within the African American community, lessons learned from past successes, and what is possible for the 21st century as we tackle a pandemic and continue to fight for genuine racial justice.

This session is free and will take place virtually on Zoom.

Advanced registration is required.

YOU ARE INVITED TO AN INFORMATION & FEEDBACK SESSION
WITH THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE BUDGET OFFICE

While public input has always been part of the City of Milwaukee's budget development process, Mayor Tom Barrett and the City of Milwaukee Department of Administration are increasing their efforts to make sure more resident voices are heard, starting this summer with the 2021 budget and a revamped citywide engagement strategy.

Join us as we welcome Bill Christianson from the City of Milwaukee Budget & Management Division for an overview of how the City budget is developed, examples of what City funds support, sources of budget revenue, how City funds differ from and sometimes leverage County and State funds, and how you can use new input and engagement tools to weigh-in on 2021 allocations.

This session is intended for members and partners of UEDA, Take Root Milwaukee,
Bank On Greater Milwaukee and CDBG-funded agencies.

Contact Jessica Wetzel at jessica@uedawi.org
if you are having trouble registering.
