Six pastors from throughout the conference talked about their own personal experiences with racism and their responses to national news of the summer, including unarmed Black men being killed by police.

The United Methodist Church proclaims the value of each person as a unique child of God and commits itself to the healing and wholeness of all persons. The United Methodist Church recognizes that the sin of racism has been destructive to its unity throughout its history. Racism continues to cause painful division and marginalization. The United Methodist Church shall confront and seek to eliminate racism, whether in organizations or in individuals, in every facet of its life and in society at large. The United Methodist Church shall work collaboratively with others to address concerns that threaten the cause of racial justice at all times and in all places.

— The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church 2016, paragraph 5

Justice and Advocacy Concerns
As people of God, we are called to work for justice for all people.
This work is conducted as part of our work as United Methodists is to ensure our elected representatives hear from us when we feel
strongly about an issue.

Be Informed and Involved in the Legislative Process

Become informed about legislative activities through your own state senator and representative. If you do not know their names, you can get them from your local election commissioner or city clerk.

You can become more active in influencing legislation by contacting your senator or representative, in person or in writing. Here are some ideas to make your communication effective:

  • Speak or write about a current topic. Select an issue of personal concern, but be sure it is an item under current consideration.

  • Speak or write clearly and concisely. Make your point with a few direct words.

  • If the topic is controversial, comment without becoming confrontational. Make it clear where you are from, i.e., full name, address, phone number, e-mail address.

  • Thank the individual for giving your ideas consideration and ask for a response.

Contacting state legislators

To contact Kansas legislators, visit the website for the Kansas legislative branchIf you visit the main Kansas website www.kansas.gov, the list is under Legislature under the Government tab at the top of the website.

In The Color of Compromise, Jemar Tisby takes readers back to the roots of sustained racism and injustice in the American church. Filled with powerful stories and examples of American Christianity's racial past, Tisby's historical narrative highlights the obvious ways people of faith have actively worked against racial justice, as well as the complicit silence of racial moderates. Identifying the cultural and institutional tables that must be flipped to bring about progress, Tisby provides an in-depth diagnosis for a racially divided American church and suggests ways to foster a more equitable and inclusive environment among God's people.

It is that time of year again. School starting is just around the corner and this year it might look different but the needs are still the same if not greater. We know that as a church community, our support of USD 253 students through the provision of school supplies has been a mission with lasting impact for our Emporia community. Teachers, parents and students alike have showered us with thank-yous, drawings and even videos telling us as a church how much this initiative positively impacts them year after year. This year, as families struggle financially and mentally in the shadow of our COVID-19 reality, this need is greater than ever.

Students returning to the classroom will physically need their own supplies in order to keep themselves safe and healthy while learning. For parents who are having difficulty with the many obstacles this time has provided, this initiative gives them one less thing to worry about while taking steps to keep their families safe upon the return to school.

While so many things in this world remain uncertain, let’s remind our community that just like God’s love, our support is consistent and our commitment to the students of USD253 is something that can be relied on.

Parking Lot Worship

This Sunday, July 26, we will continue our 8 am parking lot worship service on the west side of the church.

You will want to make sure your FM radio is working in your vehicle and will be instructed Sunday morning as to what channel to set it at to hear the worship service.

We ask that you remain in your vehicle during the service.

Restrooms will not be available.

It is our hope that this is an opportunity and means for us to more visibly be and feel like we are the church together. Hope to see you!

The 10:35 worship service will continue to be Live-Streamed on KVOE.
