Hi everyone:
I hope everyone continues to keep well this summer! FCE field and lab activities continue under FIU’s protective policies. Please see links to four new FCE pubs below, including one on disturbance-driven fish colonization led by former FCE post-doc John Gatto; global mangrove decline patterns led by FCE/NASA high school student Liza Goldberg; effects of restoration on nutrient gradients led by former FCE graduate student and technician Shishir Sarker; and a paper from our human dimensions team on nonhuman agency effects homeowner decisions. These papers represent a neat cross-cut of discoveries across FCE research themes led by folks of every career stage.
A special congratulations to our recent Ph.D., Dr. Ryan James (U. Louisiana, Lafaeyette) who defended his dissertation on energy flow through food webs (mentor, Jimmy Nelson). Way to go, Ryan, we are so proud of you!

Mangroves are crucial to Everglades
Selena Chavez, an FIU Ph.D. student wants people to know mangroves are essential to the health of the Everglades. She is working to fill data gaps in what is known about these important trees and how they respond to hurricanes. Using remote sensing technology, she is gathering data on the effects Hurricane Irma had on mangroves.

Non-native fish impact in ecosystem
Jewelfish began to appear in South Florida waterways in the 1960's. Normally, they can be found in the Nile or in pet shops, but they’ve made their way into the Everglades. There hasn't been a lot of research on how jewelfish are interacting with other native fish. Peter Flood, a biology Ph.D. student in the FIU Institute of Environment, wants to fill that void.
