Keep Regulation of Gene Editing

Kia ora Tatau Katoa,

With the elections fast approaching, we are asking for you help.

The warnings continue from Independent scientists that Gene Editing techniques can cause unexpected effects and must be regulated for safety, as recent published studies support.

But some industry players and scientists with commercial interests want to exclude Gene Editing from regulation to make it easy to release GE animals and plants.

New Zealand has some of the world's highest standards for regulating the risks from Genetic Engineering and GMOs.    We must continue to maintain our standards.

Regulation has protected and benefited our global exports of high quality safe food.

Campaign: Call the Candidates

Regardless of their Political party policy,
lobby Candidates to keep regulating Gene Editing in New Zealand,
to continue to protect people, food safety and the environment.

Share with your MP and candidates the below links to
published evidence of Gene Editing gone wrong,
despite previous claims for its accuracy and safety.

Together, we must keep NZ GE/GMO Free.

Nga mihi,

Claire Bleakley, President

Gene editing in food and farming:
Risks and unexpected consequences

8 July 2020

Source: GM Watch.

A new report by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) provides an overview of the new genetic engineering techniques of gene editing that are being explored in agriculture, and the range of risks and potential unexpected consequences that can arise from them.

The core message of the report is that gene editing is genetic engineering, and that the process of gene editing creates genetic errors, leading to unexpected effects. Thus it should be rigorously regulated via thorough risk assessments and its products must be labelled.

Science supports need to subject gene-edited plants to strict safety assessments

20 November 2019

Source: compiled by Claire Robinson, Editor, GM Watch.

We’ve been asked to produce an up-to-date list of scientific papers that support the need to subject gene-edited plants and farm animals to stringent safety assessments – in the case of plants, at least as stringent as those already applied to older-style transgenic GM crops. That list – which is not comprehensive but gives an idea of the current state of knowledge – is below. For each paper, we’ve given an explanation of the findings and their implications.

All these papers inform our understanding of unintended and potentially risky effects of gene editing. On this topic, there are currently far more papers being published in the medical research field in experiments using human and animal cells, compared with papers investigating such effects in plants.

CRISPR gene editing in human embryos "wreaks chromosomal mayhem"
– Nature journal

6 July 2020

Source: Claire Robinson, Editor, GM Watch.

Lessons must be learned for plant gene editing.

Three papers show that the use of the gene-editing tool CRISPR–Cas9 to modify human embryos can induce large unwanted changes to the genome at or near the target site.

The Nature article says the papers "give scientists a good look at what some say is an underappreciated risk of CRISPR–Cas9 editing. Previous experiments have revealed that the tool can make ‘off target’ gene mutations far from the target site, but the nearby changes identified in the latest studies can be missed by standard assessment methods."

GE Free Policy

Keep an eye out for this logo & encourage manufacturers
to get listed & use the logo.

The policy simply requires sourcing non-ge ingredients for their produce and non-ge feed for their livestock. This is a policy not a guarantee to assure customers so should be easy to encourage all producer across the board.
