Women to Watch: Every 2 or 3 years, the National Museum of Women in the Arts sends out a charge to its outreach committees: work with a leading curator to create a shortlist of emerging female artists connected to your region who work in a particular medium or theme.
In 2020 the medium is paper. NMWA has chosen a Finalist from each participating committee who will have her work included in "Women to Watch 2020: Paper Routes" at NMWA. We will feature these artists from around the world in bi-weekly emails.  Look for them on alternate Tuesdays!

Meet Sa'dia Rehman chosen to represent Ohio

Nominated by Matt Distel of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Sa'dia Rehman with "The Story of the Tracings of All the Persons Before Us and After Them," multimedia wall drawing from performance: February 21, 2020
Sa'dia Rehman is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores how contemporary and historical images communicate, consolidate, and contest ideas about race, power, and gender. Rehman incorporates elements such as family photographs, ritual objects, and English and Urdu texts into her performances, videos, installations, and large-scale wall drawings. Her core materials include hand-cut stencils, Xeroxes, velvet, charcoal, graphite, erasers, spray paint, and ink. Using an array of mark-making techniques, Rehman reflects on her experience of growing up in a Muslim household in America, where being perceived as "other" foiled the familiarity of home.

Rehman recently gave a Virtual Studio Tour to NMWA Patrons.  Watch here.

Rehman has shared her work nationally and internationally at Kentler International Drawing Space (2020), Twelve Gates Gallery (2019), The Kitchen (2018), Alwan for the Arts (2018), Cocina Humo Galeria (2016), Taubman Museum (2013), Queens Museum (2012), Brooklyn Museum (2010) and National College of Art Islamabad (2006).

She was a nominee of the 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, a recipient of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson Grant (2018), Meredith Morabito and Henrietta Mantooth Fellowship (2018) and Ann Hamilton Travel Grant (2016).

She has been awarded residencies at the Edward Albee Foundation (2018), Byrdcliffe Woodstock (2018), Vermont Studio Center (2018), ASI/LMCC & Creative Capital (2011) and AIM Bronx Museum (2008). Her work has been featured in the NYTimes, Harper's, Art Papers and ColorLines. She received her MA from City College, CUNY (2006) and her MFA from Ohio State University (2017).
