Could Green Homes Grant be solution?

After several months of disruption the Energy Efficiency sector is starting to get back to work.

And the government has announced a £2 Billion funded scheme to help.

The Green Home Grant Scheme will provide vouchers to homeowners and the Chancellor seems to hope that this will protect jobs in the energy efficiency sector. The EEA has welcomed the scheme, and we have been asked by BEIS to help with the promotion of it, but there are still many unanswered questions about how it will work. We are pressing government for the answers and we will let you know as we get

There have already been several cases reported of cowboy/ rogue traders trying to jump on the band wagon and trying to sell “energy efficiency” products by claiming they have access to vouchers already. The scheme will not be fully operational until the end of September so members should be careful when mentioning it to customers before then. If any members comes across any mis-selling by any unscrupulous rogues, you should please let us know about it.

If there is any aspect of energy efficiency you would like help with as things start to return to normal
we can be contacted on 01691 650 390 or by emailing gary@energyefficiencyassociation.co.uk

The Treasury has announced Green Home Improvement Scheme

In his summer budget statement last week, Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced a number of initiatives to protect jobs in the energy efficiency sector. One of these initiatives is the Green Home Improvement Scheme.

The scheme will provide homeowners with vouchers to cover two thirds of the cost of installing energy efficiency measures in their home, up to a maximum of £5,000 (although for those who are most vulnerable in society the amount can be raised to £10,000)

There is funding also for Local Authorities to insulate and improve public buildings, especially schools and hospitals.

So far it looks like the only measures covered are

  • solid wall Insulation
  • under-floor Insulation
  • cavity wall Insulation
  • roof insulation
  • air source heat pump
  • ground source heat pump
  • solar thermal
  • double or triple glazing ( including secondary glazing), when replacing single glazing
  • upgrading to energy efficient doors
  • hot water tank
  • appliance tank thermostats
  • heating controls

We have asked BEIS for a full list of measures, and await their response

You can read the Chancellor's full statement on the Treasury website, along with a follow-up press release from BEIS or our summary of it on the EEA website

Another aspect of the announcement made by the Chancellor is that extra funding is to be made available for the training of new apprentices in the energy efficiency sector. This could ease the burden on companies that need new installers, but who have found the cost of training prohibitive in the past.

Are you Trustmark Qualified?

In order to participate in the Green Homes Grant Scheme installers must be MCS or Trustmark certified.

The government announced the requirement in a press release on Tuesday morning and further details will be published in due course.

New EEA website

Just as lockdown started we were about to roll out a new website for the Energy Efficiency Association.
Although there is still a lot of testing and debugging to be done once the developers are off furlough, we have pushed it live anyway to help provide a source of information to members immediately on all aspects of the Green Home Improvement Scheme.

We are still testing and adding features, and it may be several more weeks before we can provide everyone with their log in passwords, but if you have any changes you would like to see, please email kenneth@energyefficiencyassociation.co.uk and we will try to accommodate them.

Due to the lack of staff available to the Association during lockdown, and because we recognise the similar issues members have been experiencing since the coronavirus crisis hit, the Directors of the Association have taken the decision to extend the membership of all members by 6 months free of charge.
