This week, Level Up! your summer by helping out at home, trying out a novel in verse, or picking up a Book Ballots title about the love of cooking. You've still got a month to finish six activities for your Level Up! game card, so keep on keeping on!

Level Up! Your Week

Take your chore game to the next level.

For some of us, chores don’t sound like the coolest thing you could be doing this summer... but they could be one of the nicest things you could do this summer! Pick something you think is kind of fun, but useful, that you could do around the house for a week. You could do some dusting, lawn mowing, or even take on some of the cooking! Try to make it fun. For example, we like to make meals out of cookbooks from our favorite books.

Novels in Verse

One of our Book Ballots books, With the Fire on High, is written by Printz Award Winning author Elizabeth Acevedo. Acevedo is a National Poetry Slam Champion and has won many awards for her writing. Her first book for teens, The Poet X, is a novel written in verse (poetry). Listen to one of her poems titled “Hair” here.

Novels in verse sometimes read a lot quicker than other novels, and can be a fun way to spice up your reading! Give one of these a try:

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acavedo

The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

This Impossible Light by Lily Myers

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough
