WCRP forges a new climate science future
Opening letter from Detlef Stammer and Helen Cleugh on the future of WCRP
WCRP is evolving to ensure that the Programme is fit for purpose and fit for the future. WCRP Chair, Detlef Stammer, and Vice-Chair, Helen Cleugh, explain where we are at with implementing the new WCRP Strategic Plan and outline opportunities that will arise in the coming months. More here.
41st Session of the Joint Scientific Committee
The 41st session of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee took place from 18 - 22 May 2020. With 91 participants over the 3 days of the Open Session, there were excellent discussions and debates over the future elements and structure of WCRP and updates from all of WCRP's core activities on their progress and future plans. We thank all of the presenters and participants for their excellent preparation and engagement in the Session. The JSC-41 Report is available online.

International analysis narrows range of
climate's sensitivity to CO2

WCRP researchers have published what is being hailed as a landmark publication on climate sensitivity. The work, undertaken as part of WCRP's Grand Challenge on Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity, brought together an international team of researchers from a wide range of climate disciplines and combined multiple lines of evidence. The full story is here.
Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update
The Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update reports that the annual mean global temperature is likely to be at least 1° Celsius above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900) in each of the coming five years (2020-2024) and there is a 20% chance that it will exceed 1.5°C in at least one year. This is according to new climate predictions, undertaken as part of WCRP's Grand Challenge on Near-Term Climate Prediction. More here.
Nominations open for 2020
data and model development prizes
Each year WCRP, together with its partners the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), awards two prizes for notable achievements in data and model development. Nominations are now open for the 2020 prizes, with a deadline of 30 September 2020.
The  WCRP/WWRP International Prize for Model Development is awarded annually to an early- to mid-career researcher for their outstanding contribution to model development for the Earth System, its components, and their coupling.

More details here.
The WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize is awarded annually to an early- to mid-career researcher for their outstanding contribution to the Earth system science community.

More details here.
Call for proposals to host a
Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Office
WCRP is calling for proposals to host a dedicated project office to support Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) activities and its overall coordination. The deadline for proposals is 31 August 2020. For more information, see the Call for Proposals.
GEWEX now hosted by George Mason University
GEWEX and the International GEWEX Project Office (IGPO) have moved to a new host institution, George Mason University (GMU). As part of the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA), the IGPO's new setting will foster even closer ties to academia and the research community. WCRP and GEWEX look forward to working through COLA and GMU to continue our mission of furthering water and energy cycle research.
Engagement of the YESS Community in
international science activities
YESS
The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) Community are becoming more and more integrated into WCRP activities, as well as with our co-sponsor, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). YESS members report on this growing involvement and some recent activities that the community has been undertaking.  Read more here.
Selected community news
  • CORDEX has published a call for Flagship Pilot Study proposals. There is an open part where you suggest a topic of your choice as long as it follows the FPS Criteria and Guidelines and a part dedicated to climate risks. Find out more here. The deadline is 15 September 2020.
  • The WCRP Grand Challenge on Regional Sea Level Change and Coastal Impacts is coordinating a specific research topic on ‘Climate Services for Adaptation to Sea-Level Rise’ in Frontiers in Marine Science. Manuscripts are to be submitted by 20 November 2020. More information here.
  • The latest Issue of GEWEX Quarterly is now online, including the role GEWEX can play in shaping land/atmosphere interaction research.
  • The 2021 SPARC Gravity Wave Symposium is now scheduled from 27 September to 1 October 2021 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. Pre-registration is now open.
