Bring art into your life.

The events of the past couple of weeks have deeply shaken the art world. On the one hand COVID-19 has exacerbated already emerging market trends, namely a shift to doing business online and the consolidation of power in the hands of blue-chip galleries and auction houses, leaving less known emerging artists and galleries grappling for visibility and market share online. On the other hand, the unrest surrounding social injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement have reignited the debate about public monuments and public status. In both instances, the pressing question that we are asked to answer is: What do we choose to remember? What artists do we choose to show and collect? Do we choose to remember and honor only the powerful or do we make a conscious effort to be more inclusive?

An enormous power lies in the hand of collectors, art patrons, curators, gallerists and art advisors like myself to make sure all kind of artists are given a voice and recognized.

Whether you are looking to acquire art for personal enjoyment or for investment; whether for home, office and public spaces, I can help you better understand how you can make a difference, and how you can collect art with a purpose. I will provide access to art, artists, and galleries and work with you to start and grow your art collection.

You will find in this newsletter highlights from the art world based on what I feel are the best shows and interviews, and important news of the moment. I hope you will enjoy this newsletter as much as I have enjoyed putting the content together, and that you will find reading it insightful.

Highlights from the Art World
Gallery Shows & Online Viewing Rooms

The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) has partnered with Artlogic to create a central online platform for collectors to find all the Members Galleries viewing rooms. Overall, the platform is easy to navigate, although not all galleries have uploaded content. Here are a few of my favorites viewing rooms.
  • Gallery Yancey Richardson Gallery beautiful presentation of South African artist Zanele Muholi's work. Not to be missed is the Seattle Art Museum's interview of Muholi that was made to coincide with the artist's museum show "Somnyama Ngonuama. Hail the Dark Lioness" in 2019. https://artdealers.viewingrooms.com/exhibitors/100-yancey-richardson-gallery/
  • Also worth exploring are the the viewing rooms of Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago; Haines Gallery and Jessica Silverman Gallery in San Francisco and Sean Kelly in New York. All 4 viewing rooms offer a fairly comprehensive overview of the gallery program and roaster of artists.

On collecting: Photography

In recent years, contemporary photography has become increasingly popular among art collectors. Photography is definitely a very exciting medium to explore as a collector, with many artists experimenting with different printing techniques. Photography is one of the more accessible media to collect with a very attractive price point.

Here is what you need to know about photography:

  • Contemporary photography comes in limited editions of prints. The smaller the edition the better. An edition of 8 is better than an edition of 50.
  • The edition indicates the number of prints of an image in a specific size.
  • Photographs are not necessarily printed at the time the image is taken.
Besides the size of the edition, the type of printing has a lot to do with the price of the work. Here are the four most common types of printing processes:
  • Gelatin Silver Prints: Typically made from a film negative in the darkroom. Gelatin silver prints are recognized for their rich tonal value and unique surface.
  • Archival Pigment Print: Originating as a digital file, either from a camera or scanner. Archival pigment prints are created on professional inkjet printers and are long lasting.
  • C-prints: C-prints were the most common color printing method until the recent shift to archival pigment prints. These are full color photographic prints made using traditional chemicals and processes. This is a process favored by the purist.
  • Platinum prints: Although a complicated and laborious printing process, platinum prints have a very specific aesthetic that is favored by some collectors for their tonal range and light quality.

Reopening: New York City Galleries

New York galleries are cautiously reopening after being closed for months. Most are open by appointment only and are making use of online reservation systems. To quote one of the gallerists, it is "so nice to begin to at least pretend things are normal." Make sure to check if the gallery is open by appointment only before heading out. Here is where I will be heading next week.

  • Zurcher Gallery: Don't miss the final week of Kyle Staver's wonderful solo exhibition of paintings and relief sculptures. The gallery is open to the public. No appointment needed except on Saturday. https://www.galeriezurcher.com/
  • Susan Inglett Gallery: Benjamin Degen: In Waves closing July 24, a show of paintings and drawings by the artist.https://www.inglettgallery.com/
  • James Cohan Gallery: solo show of Grace Weaver's paintings. Not to be missed. James Cohan has installed a Plexiglas window around its reception areas. The gallery is open by appointment only. https://www.jamescohan.com/exhibitions/grace-weaver2
