On-campus research continues to ramp back up as we enter Research Phase 4. Continue to keep an eye on the official Coming Back Safe and Strong website, which now includes the electronic daily screening portal. If you have questions or concerns about returning to campus, talk with your supervisor or seek out the other channels available in the Return to Work plan.
In this edition of the Postdoc Update, we've got some new virtual programming coming up in July and August on core skills like grant writing and faculty job searching. Also, mark your calendar for National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) on September 21-25, 2020.
1. Fall Communicating Science Classes open for Postdoc Enrollment
The Alda Center for Communicating Science's core courses are now open for postdoc enrollment. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs has an arrangement to designate two "free" spots for postdocs to audit each of the core courses below. Most are one credit and designed to complement a busy schedule.
Postdocs are expected to be full participants in the course, and are limited to one course per semester under this agreement.

Course enrollment is first come, first served.

Two roads diverged after a postdoc, and we took the one non-traditionally travelled. Research development professionals (RDP), like the ones on this panel, make team science happen by guiding scientists through the process of idea generation, building collaborations, identifying relevant funding sources, preparing (e.g., writing, critiquing, peer reviewing, editing, and project managing) grant applications, assisting with successful execution of research projects, completing grant terms, and preparing progress reports and manuscripts. Postdoctoral training confers effective and highly transferable skills that make postdocs valuable as RDP candidates.
In this presentation, three former postdocs who transferred to a RD career will share their knowledge, experiences and the unique challenges that each faced during their transition to help interested postdocs learn how to navigate this less well-known career path.
2.SUNY Workshop: Write Winning NIH Grant Proposals, Aug 13-14

Presented by Grant Writers' Seminars & Workshops, Write Winning NIH Grant Proposals will cover writing strategies for specific aims, research strategy, scientific premise, rigor and reproducibility, compelling project summaries, and strategies for re-submission.
Dates: August 13-14, 2020 Registration Deadline: July 31, 2020
Cost: $100 for first-time participants - includes shipping and fee for the required Grant Application Writer’s Workbook; $10 for participants who have already taken the workshop and who are not required to purchase the workbook. All participants must have a copy of the workbook (version NIH 5.20) in order to follow along with the workshop. The registration fee also covers the cost of the handout, which is a separate document that will be referenced during the event.
