Our President writes...

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends of Rotary,

To our members; welcome the New Rotary Year. Firstly, I wish to thank you for trusting me to be your President in this centenary year of Rotary in Australia. Our changeover dinner at the Northbridge Golf Club was well attended and showed that our club is energized for another year of challenges and opportunities. My lifelong background has evolved in working with a team spirit which I hope I can translate to our club and have every member give their best and in return get satisfaction and fulfilment as a Rotarian.

For the past few years, Rotary Clubs worldwide have been encouraged to undergo changes in the way they operate to remain relevant. Our club has shown a progressive attitude and will do so in the future to appeal to a cross-section of potential members including the younger generation and to those who are short of time for club meetings. Further in the bulletin is a list of future club events and dates which is a mixture of face-to-face meetings, virtual meetings on Zoom and Social activities. We trust you will embrace these changes and look forward to your feedback. This year’s Rotary theme is: ‘Rotary Opens Opportunities’ and together we will make it happen!

Silvio Gmur
President 2020/21, Lane Cove Rotary Club

"I give you... President Silvio!"

REPORT FROM CLUB CHANGEOVER DINNER – Tuesday 7 July 2020
President Stephen bowed out on a high from this his last official engagement after a stellar year. Following a lovely dinner at Northbridge Golf Club, President Stephen treated us to a wonderfully nostalgic, pictorial look back at the year in review. He also announced the forming of a small Satellite group of members who will work together outside of normal meetings to provide fundraising and community-based initiatives for the main club. A number of Paul Harris Fellow pins were presented to members, Craig Brodey, Lalitha Warren, Chris Curtis, Roger Wescombe, Patty Wilson-Cust and Stephen Miller. It was then time for the main event of the evening, the changeover of the Presidency. After being warmly welcomed by all, President Silvio then provided the club with a clear insight of the year ahead and what we can expect under his leadership. Thank you to MC Roger Wescombe our to special guests Past District Governor, Harold Sharpe OAM and Past District Governor, Gina Growden for completing what was a wonderful changeover night.

Members out and about – Craig Brodey

Craig Brodey attended the 50th Changeover Dinner of the Rotary Club of Gunnedah West on the 2 July. The dinner was the first opportunity for their club to get together since the COVID-19 restrictions were imposed and the members were very grateful to be able to meet in person again. They had found though that using Zoom had widened their list of speakers – in fact, Craig had been their guest speaker two weeks before. His presence at the meeting not only allowed him to deliver the greetings from President Stephen, but it also continues to build the bonds between our clubs as well as delivering a fine bottle of wine to the winner of the competition he ran during his Zoom presentation.
Craig is pictured touching elbows with incoming President Nataniel Gnomes (left) and IPP Mark Kesby (right).

District Governor Elect, Lindsay May writes:

Dear President Silvio and members,
Many thanks for your messages of condolence on the passing of my mother Jean May 23 June 2020. Also, I really appreciate the gift of fruit received this week in what has been a very busy few weeks.
Thank you all so much,
Lindsay May

Vale Una Sullivan

Una Sullivan, the wife of Past President (1980-1981) Lawrie Sullivan, has died after a long illness. Una made a major contribution to the nursing profession and to the community of Lane Cove. Una’s funeral was held in the Chapel of Royal North Shore Hospital on Wednesday 15 July.

Lawrie is well but his hearing is not sufficiently acute for him to receive phone calls. You can, however, contact Una and Lawrie’s daughter, Laura Mooney, by email at lauramooney7@gmail.com or phone 0425 246 707

and finally...

Guest to the waiter: “Can you bring me what the lady at the next table is having?”
Waiter: “Sorry, sir, but I’m pretty sure she wants to eat it herself.”

Doctor: “Can you describe the snake that bit you?”
Patient: “Yes. It looked like an angry rope.

Teacher: “Who do you think invented dancing, children?”
Little Johnny: “My guess is a big Irish family with just one bathroom.”
