Education: Services Update and Access Needs

Link to readable pdf with video description/transcript
The ThinkSelf office located at 2375 University Avenue West in St. Paul closed on March 16, 2020 in accordance with the Governor's Executive Order to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Our teachers have continued to provide instruction using a creative combination of communication platforms including videophone, Zoom, messenger, imo, Marco Polo, and text. They also have occasionally met with participants in the community to provide them with masks, materials, and basic needs.

Some of the biggest barriers our learners and teachers have faced is access to high speed internet and appropriate technology. This has made it difficult to implement and utilize a consistent learning platform. It is unlikely our classroom will reopen in the Fall, since it is nearly impossible for us to comply with State guidelines around the use of masks and social distancing while effectively teaching while using ASL, which relies heavily on facial cues. We also have concerns about our learners being exposed to Covid-19 while using public transportation to reach our classroom.

For the Fall semester, we are tentatively planning to provide distance education, with some opportunities for 1:1 and small group instruction when possible (meeting outdoors, or through glass/pexiglass barriers, for example).

To make distance learning effective, our learners need access to better equipment. Please consider supporting our efforts by donating to the

Advocacy: Out and About in the Community

Our advocacy team members are considered essential workers. We have continued to provide services in the community while working from home, limiting in-person contact to emergency situations until more recently. Courthouses and other government services have opened back up with strict guidelines, and the team has been having more in-person meetings - following guidelines for social distancing, mask usage, and screening protocols - to ensure our participants' needs for safety and security are met during these challenging times.

Office Remodel: Enjoy this Sneak Peek!

Our building was sold last year and the new owner decided to make the best of the shutdown. They have been hard at work remodeling spaces throughout the building as well as the exterior.

The building has a newly repaved parking lot that will soon have designated accessible spaces, common areas have been repainted and resurfaced, the second floor was fully gutted and remodeled, and ThinkSelf's suite 110 has had a full makeover.

Improvements to Suite 110 include:
  • Repainted walls and trim
  • Refinished terrazzo flooring
  • New blinds
  • New carpet
  • New kitchen sink and counters/shelving
  • Upgraded electrical in the kitchen
It looks fantastic already!

Once the kitchen is complete, we will be setting up our office spaces to allow our staff to safely work staggered schedules in the office and meet with participants/learners through glass barriers when needed.
