It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of former Parkdale Project Read collective member, Wendy Tanner - a beloved friend, colleague, and mentor who passed away in June 2020 at the age of 67.
You can view her online obituary here.
Wendy worked at Project Read from 1997 to 2000. She was a life-long educator and social justice activist, who loved working with literacy students. Wendy also loved to sing, sew, dance, go to movies and plays, and realized how the arts enrich our lives and feed our learning.
In respectful consultation with Wendy's loved ones, Parkdale Project Read has established the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy to honour her life and and celebrate her contributions to the adult literacy community.
This fund will support adult literacy learning through arts-based activities and projects. PPR learners will explore new ways of expressing themselves through workshops led by artist-facilitators, and have access to supplies, such as sewing and craft materials, instruments and song sheets, etc.
Workshops will include singing, drumming, sewing, expressive movement, mural-making, creative writing, bookmaking, learner story publishing, and much more.
If you wish to make a donation to the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy, please visit PPR's Canada Helps page.
Note: in the section that states: "Apply your donation to a specific fund", please select the "Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy".
Thank you for your support in memory of Wendy.
