In Memoriam: Wendy Tanner

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of former Parkdale Project Read collective member, Wendy Tanner - a beloved friend, colleague, and mentor who passed away in June 2020 at the age of 67.

You can view her online obituary here.

Wendy worked at Project Read from 1997 to 2000. She was a life-long educator and social justice activist, who loved working with literacy students. Wendy also loved to sing, sew, dance, go to movies and plays, and realized how the arts enrich our lives and feed our learning.

In respectful consultation with Wendy's loved ones, Parkdale Project Read has established the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy to honour her life and and celebrate her contributions to the adult literacy community.

This fund will support adult literacy learning through arts-based  activities and projects. PPR learners will explore new ways of expressing themselves through workshops led by artist-facilitators, and have access to supplies, such as sewing and craft materials, instruments and song sheets, etc.

Workshops will include singing, drumming, sewing, expressive movement, mural-making, creative writing, bookmaking, learner story publishing, and much more.

If you wish to make a donation to the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy, please visit PPR's Canada Helps page.

Note: in the section that states: "Apply your donation to a specific fund", please select the "Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy".

Thank you for your support in memory of Wendy.

BOOKMARK Fundraiser

Bandit Brewery, the small micro-brewery located in the heart of Roncesvalles has been a great friend to PPR over the years.

They have volunteered to prepare and serve community meals at our annual gatherings. And they have lead various fundraising initiatives in support of our adult literacy program.

This summer, Bandit Brewery has created a new craft beer that they have named BOOKMARK in honour of Parkdale Project Read!

This a quote from their website

"We are very happy to announce that we're partnering with our longtime friends Parkdale Project Read, whose remarkable work providing adult literacy services in the Parkdale community is as necessary as ever. We've built a great partnership with PPR over the past few years and we hope to make Bookmark a yearly release in their support."

We are honoured to be recognized and are grateful to Bandit Brewery founders, Stephane and Shehzad and their staff team for their creativity and generosity!

This fundraiser will support adult literacy learners to access urgent community resources, participate in remote learning groups, and connect to resources online during this pandemic.

Bookmark is now available at Bandit Brewery:

"When I’m alone I never talk, or laugh, or anything. Loneliness keeps me inside. When we’re with the group, there is learning, stories, something funny. What is on the inside, we can let it outside. It makes our day, our life. We need it, we need more of it."

- quote from a PPR Learner currently attending remote groups

Parkdale Project Read will remain closed until further notice.

Staff continue to work remotely, maintain regular contact with PPR Learners, facilitate weekly remote learning groups.

We'll keep you updated about possible re-opening plans.

Keep in touch at 416-531-6308 or info@parkdaleprojectread.org

Please stay safe and stay connected!
