Preparing for Fall (Part 2)

Like every supermarket across America, George Fox University now has big stickers on the floor, directing you where to stand. Social distancing signs and hand-washing reminders are visible in all corners of campus. Classrooms and workstations have been reconfigured. Our dining team has creatively adapted their service to include more pre-ordered, to-go options. Technically, we are ready to welcome students back!

And yet, every day brings with it the possibility of more change, new updates, and continued uncertainty. I don’t think I’ve used the word "pivot" as much as I have in the past month! As a campus community, flexibility, creativity and adaptability are all words frequently woven into our Zoom meetings as we continue to follow the governor's requirements for safely welcoming back students.

During this season, we invite your prayers for our campus community. Please be praying for the university as we navigate these uncertain times, asking for wisdom in the ever-changing environment. Pray for students as they prepare for what will surely be a unique learning experience this fall.

Other Goings On

In July, the Northwest Conference presidents made the decision to postpone high- and medium-risk fall sports (soccer, football and volleyball) until spring 2021. As a result, the university is cancelling Homecoming 2020. Instead of in-person events this fall, there will be many opportunities for you to stay connected virtually. Make plans to join us for one of these events!

If you’re craving a little in-person activity this summer, Columbia Sportswear has once again offered our community the opportunity to visit the Employee Store. Just click the red button at the bottom of this email - and bring your mask - and take advantage of their summer sales.

Grace and Peace,

Recruit-a-Bruin is Back!

On July 15, the Newberg campus officially re-opened for in-person tours and admissions appointments. In our efforts to spread the news far and wide, the alumni office is bringing back the Recruit-a-Bruin perk! When you refer a potential Bruin and they sign up for a campus tour, they'll be eligible for a special gift, and you will too!  Recruit-a-Bruin here.

Help Stock the Pantry for Students Returning this Fall

Since May, more than 600 students, alumni and their families who live locally have utilized the food bank. We anticipate that this number will increase once school starts. Please consider helping in one of two ways:

1. Make a tax-deducible gift to the Bruin Community Pantry, here.

2. Shop for and deliver the below items to the food bank in Roberts Center during its hours of operation (currently Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon).

Or, contact Jere Witherspoon (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu) to meet you at the food bank.

Thank you for helping to stock the food bank for students returning to campus this month!

Here is a list of the items that are needed:

  • Pasta sauce
  • Tuna
  • Cereal
  • Gluten-free items
  • Top ramen
  • Garbanzo beans
  • Black beans
  • Soups
  • Canned meat
  • Granola bars
  • Microwave popcorn

Alumnus Helps Secure $62 Million in Funding for Oregon Cares Fund

Alumnus Ben Sand (MDiv '10) is CEO of Oregon nonprofit The Contingent and a central figure in
the successful effort last month to secure the single-largest amount of money established for and organized by the African American community in the history of Oregon. Sand helped secure $62 million in funding for the Oregon Cares Fund for Black relief and resiliency.

Funding for the targeted investment in the state's Black community comes from the Coronavirus Relief Fund. The Oregon Cares Fund will provide cash relief to local families and Black-owned small businesses using grants. The $62 million will be administered by The Contingent — formerly known as the Portland Leadership Foundation — which operates in all 36 counties and has a working relationship with the state's Department of Human Services. The Black United Fund of Oregon, based in Portland, also will be involved.
