Wrap Up - Hire Right

If you have found hiring right to be a topic of interest, feel free to go to SumptionandWyland.com to download the Fast Answers Coaching Sheet on this topic.  Just remember in this critical time, to keep positive as you seek new employment opportunities.  For those hiring, look deep.  Success is not having a hundred resumes cross your desk.  Success is having a handful of the right resumes to consider.

Hiring Managers, don’t fall into these traps when hiring new people:

  • Don’t write a job description that is incomplete, fuzzy, and that focuses only on the transactional items of the work to be done.
  • Don’t shortlist only those who have “direct experience” instead of honoring talent as a selection criterion.
  • Don’t select only at the “usual suspects” – those people who saw the job posting and presented themselves for consideration.  Use your network to recruit.
  • Don’t forget about the critical importance of onboarding well.
  • Don’t overlook talent right under your nose and fail to grow talent inside your own organization.

For job seekers, be specific about what you want in a job.  Only apply for those positions that you have vetted to fit your desire.  When you choose to apply for a job, do the work.  Customize your resume.  Dig deep into the call for applicants and help the hiring manager see the relevant experience and the fit of your talent to do NEW work for their company.  Prepare your references to be wonderful salespeople in a reference interview.  Follow up with references to determine what they need to be your champion.  Follow up with hiring managers to assure your resume has gotten to the right desk.

Don't let social distancing distance you from your network.

For both job seekers and hiring managers, get out and about.  Our current state of working from home, social distancing and mask-wearing can deter us from keeping in touch with people.  Don’t let it.  I have figured out that “virtual” lunch and coffee dates work well and allow us to stay in touch.  Make that happen so that you can be ready when job opportunities come…or for when the best job seeker is right under your nose!
