Friends,

I know today is hard. I know, as parents, today is the deadline to make a decision about your child's immediate educational future. I know this decision comes as a heavy burden to many and brings so many more questions than answers. I know you are hoping you are doing the right thing for your family, all the while recognizing that the decision-making won't relieve the worry.

I know, as staff members, today's outcome may determine whether you will be required to teach in-person or via distance learning. I know you miss your students and want to see them all, but I also know safety is a big, relevant concern.  I know you have questions, so many more questions than answers.

And here I am touching base, connecting and asking you to be the light in the dark and lead your community. Do you feel like a toddler, shouting "I don't wanna!" while stomping your feet?  I get it. I hear you. I understand. I know it's daunting. And still, I am asking you to lead.

This year will not be easy - we all know this. It will require adjustments on all our parts, it will require thinking outside the box and it will require patience. So much patience. But I believe in you and your capacity to make a difference. Your leadership in the PTA is the link between families and schools.

What are the needs of your community right now? WHO might you be fundraising for this year and WHY? How can the PTA best assist while maintaining the integrity of the mission? Can PTA membership be the connection between Hybrid and Distance Learning families? Think about what your personal PTA story is and why you got involved in the first place. WHAT IS YOUR WHY?  Work with your board to answer these questions and build your membership drive, goals and plan from there.

Luckily, in all of this, you are not alone. Your District Board is here to help - every step of the way. Virginia PTA is also here to help.  Have you attended any SLTs yet? You can find the completed webinar slides here. Virginia PTA is also developing guidance on how to manage your PTA in a virtual setting this year. We've got your back and will be sending information out soon.

Let's talk finances - you still need to complete a Financial Review from the 2019-2020 school year. If you have not done so already, please begin looking into this. You can find guidance and more information here

As the State and County continue to address plans to reopen schools this fall, the Hunt District PTA recently sent letters to our state and local officials to share the Virginia PTA's Position Statement on the Reopening of Schools.

At the State level, we highlighted the need for clearly defined triggers to identify the start and end of each phase for planning purposes, emergency state funding to enable school divisions to safely reopen schools, new flexible sick/leave policies, and improved access to childcare to support our families and staff.

At the local level, we highlighted the need for clear communication regarding instruction and cleaning protocols, guaranteed flexible scheduling options for staff with high risk health conditions, access to high speed internet access for all students, and improved access to childcare.

In addition, we also sent a letter to Superintendent Dr. Wiiliams, LCPS senior staff, and the School Board with a list of unanswered questions gathered from PTA leaders throughout the County.  We emphasized the importance of transparent communication utilizing multiple platforms and translation services to effectively relay all information to the community.

To all of our wonderful community advocates...keep asking questions, proposing solutions, and making your voices heard!  While we are currently faced with so many obstacles and unknowns, your efforts, in partnership with our elected officials and school division leaders, will create the best possible outcome for our students, families, and staff.

The next LCPS School Board meeting is scheduled for July 21, 2020. Agendas are posted in Board Docs the Friday before. Be sure to tune in.
