2020 Sierra Retreat at Lake Sequoia Cancelled

The APA Central Section is saddened to announce this highly anticipated annual retreat in August will be cancelled this year due to COVID-19. For the safety of our members and families the YMCA will not be opening up the camp site until further notice.

We hope that everyone that intended to go this year will join us at next year's retreat. To recap on this once a year event, it's a three-day retreat hosted at the YMCA's Sequoia Lake Summer Camp site. Anywhere from 20-60 APA members stay in cabins along the lake and enjoy in activities that include: swimming, water activities, stargazing, hiking, camp fires, mess hall style meals, bingo, bonding with APA members throughout California and of course an AICP approved program.

We offer our sincerest regret this event won't happen this year and don't worry we won't replace it with a virtual camping zoom meeting. Hope to see all of you next year!

-Karl Schoettler (APA Central Section Sequoia Retreat Chair)

PS. The photo of the cabins above is of the actual YMCA cabins that we stay in at the retreat.

Free APA Student Membership

It’s easier and more affordable than ever for students and new planners to get started in APA. In fact, membership is now free for any student actively enrolled or matriculated in any university or college degree program. It remains free for the duration of an individual’s studies. “Free” includes APA, APA chapter, and AICP membership as well as membership in up to five APA divisions. Student members will be eligible for two years of reduced dues after ending their studies.

Our chapter would like to encourage current members to reach out to Central Valley community colleges, public and private universities in your area that have planning-related majors to help us increase our student involvement in the planning profession. Anyone on alumni boards or community college districts are welcome to contact Nicole Hoke our Student Programs Manager at nicole@odellplanning.com to help plan student-centric programming in the Central Valley.
