People Development – even more, important in times like this!

What a crazy time to live in! We all have faced major challenges over the last 6 month: going remote, being isolated, facing uncertainty on so many levels, maybe illness, even personal loss. And none of us was prepared for that.

But there have been positive things as well! I, for example, was impressed by how well the product community handled all of this. Everybody was highly supportive of each other. Companies that were forced to lay people off cooperated with the ones that benefited from the situation and had the chance to hire people. Twitter exploded by tweets like this one from James leveraging the power of our networks to make sure people can find their next job. And many product people took a chance to review their own beliefs and reflected on the way they are building products once more. #blacklivesmatter reminded all of us to educate ourselves and to make sure the products we are building are part of the solution… not causing more problems!

But our work here is not finished and none of this is over yet!

The seas are still rough, and nobody knows what the next month will bring. So, it´s in the very own interest of everybody to keep learning, adapting, and growing. And the companies supporting personal development now will be the ones getting through all of this better because they will be more resilient, and they will react to change much quicker than others.

So please make sure personal development is on your agenda! No matter if you are a product manager or are leading the product organization of your company. Take a moment to reflect if you are spending enough time on this, if every product person has an ally, somebody helping them in their self-progression journey and if everybody has a vision for themselves to make sure they are developing the right way.

I’ll address some of the topics in this newsletter and I’m happy to talk to you if you want to learn more on that!

Stay positive, curious, sane and healthy,

Petra

How to put your Personal Development on the Agenda?

It takes competent, passionate, skilled product people (and a cross‐functional product development team sharing the same characteristics) to deliver a successful product. And becoming this kind of a product manager takes time, effort, and commitment. It ́s a long journey and a hard one if you are not having a kind of compass that helps you find your way. Too few product people are having a line manager helping them with all of this and you're probably having to manage your development and don't know where to start.

I gave a talk at this years MTPcon to share my experience on how to take control of your skill growth. What I've shared will help you to figure out what it needs to become an even better product manager. And I have presented my framework for PM Development - the PMwheel - so that you can start your growth journey tomorrow.

The video will be available for MTP members on August 12th.
Slides, Resources and a Transcript of the talk can be found here.

Derek Sivers – How to thrive in an unknowable future

I was lucky to see Derek's performance live at the Conference in Malmö in 2015. And the last months have reminded me more often of his words. So I want to share them with you.

My book on how to develop STRONG product people

As mentioned in my last Newsletter: I was planning to write a book for all the Heads of Product, Product Team Leads, CPOs out there. And I did! The Manuscript is currently in peer-review.

So if you’re a product leader looking for advice on how to be certain that every product manager on your team is living up to their full potential, if you want to make sure your product people are competent, empowered and inspired, and would like to know how you can best help them on this journey then this book is for you! I hope to release the book late 2020 / early 2021.

Christina Wodtke - The Team That Managed Itself: A Story of Leadership

It fascinates me how Christina managed to write a book that allows me as a reader to dive so deeply into an exciting story and learn so many important and helpful things along the way.
My favourite part is where Allie (the main character of the story, just recently promoted to GM) is in a meeting with a mentor developing the role-description/employee profile for the new to hire Design Lead. In this section, it becomes clear how much work is needed to create even seemingly simple things like a candidate profile. But it also shows how far you can come with a good sparring partner and a single meeting.
This maybe is the main message for me: Being a Manager in the world of empowered teams might be complex and challenging and it's a lot of work. But everyone can do it with a little help and a good book at hand!
