JULY WORKING BEE CANCELLED

FRIENDS OF SOUTH SURREY PARK

JULY 2020 NEWSLETTER

Sunday Working Bee - 26th July Cancelled
Due to Covid-19 restrictions in Melbourne our July working bee planting has been cancelled.
Sunday Working Bee Report - 28th June, 2020

We had a fantastic turn out for the working bee held on Sunday 28 June, 2020 with sixteen people attending to attack the weeds at Delta Street.

We were especially pleased to welcome local ward councillors Lisa Hollingsworth (Lynden Ward) and Jane Addis (Maling Ward). (Who are pictured above with Pam)

It was a beautiful sunny winters morning and the result of our hard work was a massive pile of weeds and many liberated native plants.

Long time Friend of South Surrey Park member Ursula Povey was there energetically pulling out the weeds, despite the fact she was due to be admitted to hospital in the afternoon!

Tuesday Toilers

Jenine has purchased some Hi-Viz vests on our behalf and here are  Peter and David   modelling them.
They had a good turnout of seven workers this week, weeding and spreading mulch in the Delta street plantation.   This area is improving due to the policy of weeding around our indigenous plants and then spreading newspaper and mulch to prevent regrowth.

General News
Annual General Meeting will be held on 7th October, hopefully in The Cottage, Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. We are celebrating twenty five years of work in South Surrey Park and it will be interesting to hear our guest speakers talk about the park as it was in their youth.
Banner

Your committee had an email this morning from Jenine, to advise us that our banner has arrived.  She and David put it up for this photograph and can't wait until we can install it again prior to working bees to encourage lots of volunteer participation.

In the Park this month - Golden Whistler
At our last working bee I was thrilled to see a different bird high up in the trees below Delta Street.   It sat there long enough for me to note  some identifying features.   I rushed to my trusty app and before I could find out what it was, Phyl had whipped out his bird id card from his pocket and worked out it was a male Golden Whistler!
Here is a photograph and information from the Museum Victoria Field Guide to Victorian Fauna.
The male has a white throat, black top of head and yellow underneath. Females are brown-grey and their underparts are light brown to  pale yellow. The body is up to 20 cm long.
The male has a loud cheerful call during the breeding season but they are silent at other times.
They mainly eat insects, other invertebrates and fruit.
