Hey y'all,
My bestie and her new hubby (you can read about her experience of "cancelling" their wedding at the outset of COVID here) are coming to town for some socially distanced outdoor hangs this weekend. I think y'all know by now that I take a more measured approach to being outdoorsy, and she's the same, so our plans consist of sitting in a river and making s'mores.
If you're more of an adventure seeker—as most Western North Carolinians are—check out some of our old Leisure & Libation pieces, like this 2018 article on road biking, this one on downhill mountain biking, or this classic take on our regional rivers and their activities. But I think daredevils and layabouts alike will agree on this month's L&L: local ice creameries. 🍦
Until next week,
Emily Glaser, Managing Editor

Bouncing Back 🏡 According to Beverly-Hanks Realtors' Q2 2020 Real Estate Market Report, the local market has recovered faster than expected: Our region's sales are only down 2% year-to-date. It's a sellers market, as demand remains high but supply is low, with 33% fewer homes available as of July 1 than the same day in 2019 (there were 3,038 residential properties on the market at the end of Q1, and just 2,838 at the end of Q2). Check out the full report.

Funding Recovery 💰 Remember all those local recovery funds we announced a couple months back? They're starting to make an impact. The Haywood Recovery Fund, for example, has distributed $170,600 to 18 small businesses in Haywood County, 7 of which were minority- or women-owned businesses. $200K+ is still available—apply here, and read the full report.

Thank You, Healthcare Workers! 🎨 Local muralist Ian Brownlee wanted to paint a mural to thank all the hospital workers. After reaching out to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina (CFWNC), Brownlee was connected with the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, the owner of a small building directly across from the entrance to Mission’s ER. With the help of the two nonprofits, he painted a vibrant mural message, “thank you healthcare workers," on the building.
