Puddletown Blueberries

We've just had our first delivery of the year from our local blueberry grower and what a treat to have a local blueberry grower! Based in Bockhampton, just outside Dorchester, Puddletown Blueberries are grown on a family farm and sold through pick-your-own (click on the button below for times) and local shops like ours.
Blueberries are known to be high in nutrients and anti-oxidants. If you have only tried the foreign ubiquitous blueberries and thought them tasteless, now is the time to see what they actually taste like in season and freshly picked.

Dorset Blue

Another Dorset Blue, but this time cheese rather than fruit. I think Blue Vinny was one of the first cheeses we ever stocked in the farm shop, along with Denhay Cheddar (sadly no longer inproduction).
Dorset blue vinny was once made in nearly every farmhouse in Dorset until the second world war when production died out completely. Michael Davis resurrected the cheese in the 1980s using a 300 year old recipe and his daughter, Emily, is now carrying on that tradition. In 1998 they were the first food producer to be awarded PGI status.
Blue Vinny has a great character and can vary depending on age and batch. Some cheese are very blue, some crumbly, some creamy. Some are milder than others but all have that great tangy flavour from the mould.
We sell wedges in the shop and 'Mini Vinny' truckles at Christmas time. We also stock the chutneys made at Woodbridge Farm: Woodbridge Chutney and Spiced Tomato Chutney.

Blue Vinny, Ale, Spring onion & Marmite Muffins

Thank you to local "foodaholic chef" Sheila Gilbey for donating one of her fabulous recipes this week. Sheila runs a bed and breakfast in Charmouth and also a pop-up restaurant. Her blog, Sheila's Pantry, is full of delicious recipes and this one is designed to use up the leftovers in your fridge.

In case you don't have stale cheese and flat beer hanging around (I actually do!), here is the ingredients list:

  • 220g Blue Vinny (or other hard cheese)
  • 250ml beer
  • 6 spring onions
  • 2 tbsp marmite
  • 1 egg
  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 60g wholemeal flour
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
