What's New at Onboard Maritime

Celebrating passes

This month we are celebrating with Sam MacLeod and Craig Fitzsimons. With the MCA commencing online MCA orals from 22 June, we were delighted that Sam and Craig got the opportunity to sit their exams online (and more importantly pass them!)

Sam has now achieved his Chief Mate Unlimited Certificate of Competency and Craig his Master Mariner Unlimited Certificate of Competency. Congratulations to them both, and we wish them every success in the future. Sam was even featured in the Stornoway Gazette this month!

If you have your oral exam coming soon, contact angus@onboardmaritime.com to arrange a mock oral. It’s a different medium compared to a face-to-face exam, and it’s good to practice looking into the camera, getting the lighting set correctly as well as answering those all-important questions!

Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognition

This month we also gained RYA recognition to deliver and certify their shore-based courses. The courses we will now be offering include:
  • Basic Navigation and Safety
  • RYA Day Skipper
  • RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean are recognised by the MCA if they are commercially endorsed and can be used towards Boatmaster and Master II/2 200 GT Certificates of Competency.

Industry News

Maritime Safety Week 2020
July the 6th saw the beginning of Maritime Safety Week 2020. The Chief Inspector of the MAIB Captain Andrew Moll saw this as an opportunity and said

“I hope that Maritime Safety Week also the opportunity for improvements to be made from the bottom up. Across the industry, whether it is reviewing work procedures, servicing equipment or practising emergency responses, making time for safety is time well spent; it will lead to safer ships, reduce the risk to the environment and save lives.”

The MAIB published its annual report the week before which can be accessed here.

NAPA webinar
The software stability company NAPA was also busy this month. It produced an interesting webinar showing how the latest intact and damage stability information is incorporated into their software. You can access the webinar here.

Zea Servant accident report
Also published this month was the accident report into the cargo vessel Zea Servant. This is a really useful report to read to gain a better understanding of the hazards involved in lifting operations and the LOLER regulations.

UK P&I Club webinar
Another resource we enjoyed this month was the UK P&I club webinar giving an overview of what a P&I club does and the risks it covers. Good background knowledge for anyone working towards their Mates / Masters oral exam. You can access the webinar here.
