NEWSLETTER NEWS
Ministerial Search Committee is on the move while forging ahead in the search for a Settled Minister!

Greetings from the Search Committee!!! The health and vitality of First Unitarian Church depends in part on a good fit between our congregation and our settled minister. The Search Committee will be in conversation with the congregation about the needs of groups and committees within the congregation in the search process. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) will help the Ministerial Search Committee to connect ministers searching for a position with our congregation who want to find a minister.

As you may know, the Ministerial Search Committee is composed of seven selected congregants. All participants will be engaged throughout the search process helping one another as needed. Currently, each member is leading an agreed-upon position:

Christine Beregi Arranger
Mary Denison Congregational Survey and Process Observer
David Doorley Website
Brian Junker Chair
Peggy Parsons Documents Packet
James L. Reitz Treasurer
Michael Safran Communication

We were quite busy during the month of June! We joined a workshop on June 13th that included the UUA Transitions Office and affiliated colleagues for a virtual presentation of the principles and practices of a well-executed ministerial search. The following weekend on the 19th and 20th we met with Kathy Kerns, our UUA Regional Transitions Coach, in a Ministerial Search Committee Zoom meeting.

We have decided as a team to meet weekly to make sure all the details of the search are in place and moving forward. We will keep you updated on the progress of the search for a settled minister. It is an exciting time of change in our church. The entire congregation will play a part in selecting our next minister!

Please be cautious about emails!
Please continue to be cautious when responding to any email that appears to come from Rev. Connie Grant--or from anyone else. There has recently been another round of phishing emails asking for “assistance” in the form of gift cards.  Some of these use variations on actual addresses, and it appears that some use real addresses.  Rev. Connie's actual address is Constance.L.Grant (at) gmail.com

CONNECT

Dear First Unitarian Church activity leaders
As you know, closure of the church building is being extended at least through December 31, 2020. And as you know, the activities of the church continue! Many of the activities you lead are meeting regularly using Zoom or other technology. It’s important to let the church community – and others who would be interested – know what’s going on! (If you would like to use the church Zoom account for your meeting, please contact me to set this up.)

Please submit information about your meeting times (as well as contact information so congregants can request links) for the church calendar to the Publicize Your Event FormAn updated church calendar will be linked to the website so that this information is available to all.

Also, please keep us all informed about your activity by regularly submitting information for the Weekly Chalice Newsletter. As you are probably aware, the focus of each week’s newsletter cycles through the four mission areas of the church:

First week of the month: INSPIRE [Minister’s column, monthly worship service information, music events, etc.]

Second week of the month: LEARN [Director of Lifespan Religious Education’s column, religious education events, etc.]

Third week of the month: CONNECT [Women’s Alliance, Gathering of Men, Covenant Groups, other small group gatherings, Membership Team events and information, Pastoral Care Team information, etc.]

Fourth week of the month: SERVE [social service and social justice events and information, etc.]

And please check the church website to make sure that information about your activity is up-to-date. Please submit updated information to the  Publicize Your Event Form or to cmoultrie@first-unitarian-pgh.org

The church building is closed; the church community is open! Let’s all help to make sure this is evident to everyone.

Please be in touch!

Rev. Connie Grant

Helping Each Other
During these trying times, members of the church may occasionally need a helping hand. The Pastoral Care Team asks you to identify ways you may be able to assist. We expect you would be called only a few times during the year. Please contact a member of the team if you are able to help.

You’ll be asked to indicate which of these you may be able to help with from time to time:

□ Transportation

□ Providing a meal for an individual or family

□ Shopping

In the event of a need in the congregation, you may be contacted to see whether you are available to help at that time. Your help will be appreciated!

Opportunities for Involvement
Please contact Rev. Connie Grant at Constance.L.Grant@gmail.com or 847-840-8542 if you would like to learn more about any of these opportunities to help congregation members stay connected with each other and with the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh!

Forming a Racial Equity Task Force
Do you want to be part of the ongoing conversation, study, and action on the topic of race? How can we focus on working for racial justice? It has long been true, today it’s truer than ever: In these times it’s increasingly important to face the reality of where we are as a society and to do something concrete about it. There are many conversations going on, with many questions about what we can do. How can we focus our conversation and our actions in our individual lives and the First Unitarian Church community, and in our larger world?

Engaging the Congregation
Are you interested in being part of an Engagement Team, to help church members and friends connect with each other and with the church? What additional large- or small-group activities would enhance congregational life?

Technical Support for Streaming Services
Our tech crew has been doing an amazing job of producing our streaming worship services, achieving high production values, and maintaining this central experience for the church community. There is a need for at least one more member of the crew. If you are AV-savvy and/or have a technical bent, your assistance would be welcome!

Children and Youth Religious Education
2020-21 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT

This year's Sunday RE program will provide a unique opportunity to be grounded in Unitarian Universalist identity at every turn!
For this year, with our move to virtual RE, we are asking potential volunteers to teach every other week.  The LRED will lead a group RE session on the other weeks.  In the group sessions, we will explore the
6 Sources, while in the sessions with volunteers, we will encourage exploring the 7 Principles.  Each principle and source has 3 weeks of focus!  The program themes for each class are as follows:

PreK-K - World of Wonder

This program delves deep into our Unitarian Universalist seventh Principle. It instills respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part and appreciation of its beauty, excitement, and mystery. It is founded on the premise that direct experience in nature is essential to children's physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development. Time spent experiencing and exploring during the kindergarten and first-grade years begins a practice that can bring lifelong openness to the wonder nature can spark.

1st - 3rd Grade - Signs of Our Faith: Being UU Every Day

Signs of Our Faith guides children to do their best to live faithful lives every day. It presents fourteen traits or values that most Unitarian Universalist love, including the quest for knowledge, reverence for life, supporting one another on our faith journeys, and public witness. Children examine how their lives do and can exhibit these traits and values, and come to understand that their faith is a living faith whose histories and teachings are fortifications for living faithfully in a complex world.

4th - 6th Grade - Sing to the Power

Sing to the Power affirms our Unitarian Universalist heritage of confronting "powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love." Participants experience their own power and understand how it can help them to be leaders.

7th & 8th Grade - Coming of Age

As youth prepare to leave childhood, participants will explore theology, spirituality and history through discussion, drama, music, writing and art.  Guided by individual mentors of the youths' choosing, youth will be able to define their beliefs and put their faith into action.  The program culminates in the writing of a Credo statement, and a Coming of Age service.  *This year, Coming of Age will be for all 7th and 8th graders, rather than a supplemental RE program, as it has been in the past.

9th - 10th Grade - High School Youth Group

Youth group have a safe and friendly place to explore issues and events going on in their lives, organize action for social justice, and worship and socialize together.  The youth group is directed by the youth with guidance and help from adult advisors.

Exploring the 6 Sources - Family RE (*on alternating weeks w/ RE classes)

Join the LRED every other week for a multi-generational lesson on the
6 Sources of our Unitarian Universalist faith.  Parents are welcome to attend.

Each of these programs focuses particularly on engaging everyday Unitarian Universalist values in action through spiritual practices at home, worship together, and faith in action in our communities.  We will explore all of our stories, wisdom tales, and lessons specifically through the lens of Unitarian Universalism's unique theologies and foundations.

Classes are planned to take place following the service, allowing volunteers and families some flexibility in commitment.  Children and youth who are returning do not need to register unless the information is changed such as address and contact information.  If this is your first time attending our year-long RE program, please register children and youth using the
link below.
