Celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act 30th Anniversary

Staff Organization: Staff Alliance for Disability Access (SADA)
Americans With Disabilities Act 30 years strong
Here is a snippet from the celebration announcement from Mark Brindle, Chair of the Staff Alliance for Disability Access (SADA):

Disability knows no single race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It is for all these reasons we would like to invite our UC Berkeley Community to join us in celebration of such a momentous 30 year anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990-2020).

Our own campus, UC Berkeley, has a very close relationship with the early disabled student activists who helped develop the Americans with Disabilities Act that we see today. The independent living movement of the 1960s founded by UCB disabled students: Ed Roberts, Hale Zukas, and Jan McEwan Brown focused on making the full academic and social life of the university accessible to all. It is because of them that Berkeley was the first city to have continuous curb-cut sidewalk ramps installed throughout Telegraph and Shattuck Avenues in 1974, allowing unimpeded travel via wheelchair to most campus venues. This action later then led to what we know as “bumpy-tiles” to aid the blind as they navigated the streets as well. Later, these same students and community members joined together to form The Center for Independent Living, Inc.
