MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES

One Health for Food Systems Conference: Integrating Veterinary, Food, Animal, Agriculture, and Engineering Sciences | July 20-31, 2020

The first fully online conference was a huge success. The One Health for Food Systems Conference: Integrating Veterinary, Food, Animal, Agriculture, and Engineering Sciences drew a total of 80 participants, including 31 graduate students, 30 undergraduate students, and 19 professors, with participants connecting from China, Japan, the UK, and Nepal.

The online conference, directed by Bennie Osburn, and coordinated by Chris Brunner and Michael Luo,  featured faculty from the School of Veterinary Medicine, the departments of Plant Science, Land, Air and Water, Food Science and Technology, and Animal Sciences delivering live Zoom lectures on subjects as diverse as soil health, microbes and plant health, to the involvement of microbiome analysis in food safety research, primary care and preventive veterinary medicine education, and building capacity to prevent pandemics using a One Health approach.

The unique schedule included morning session lectures, group reports, a virtual dairy tour led by Heather Johnson and James Cullor, and UC Davis students speaking about graduate education at UC Davis. Afternoon sessions included group and panel discussions, reports by graduate students, and get-togethers where attendees were randomly matched together for one-on-one conversations every 5 minutes at events called “cocktail parties.” This allowed participants to interact with other students that they might not otherwise have a chance to meet.  The conference culminated in presentations by seven teams, an online virtual certificate ceremony, and a call to action by Chris Brunner for the attendees to stay in touch, build on new friendships, and follow through on their presentation's calls to action.

WIFSS Student Employees Make Learning Accessible for Spanish-speaking Californians | September 21, 2020

Lack of Spanish language resources can put agricultural and food workers at risk. Limited access to quality training materials on research-based food safety practices can also put the public health at risk. Therefore, it is important at the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security (WIFSS) to increase access to educational materials for the safety of all Californians. WIFSS is a University of California, Davis program that serves the global community by conducting research, developing training, and providing outreach programs that focus on the safety and health of people, animals, and the environment. Ana Araujo, Goretti Alvarez, and Maria Orozco are student employees at WIFSS that worked together as a team to help translate the final Spanish version of the WIFSS FSMA-PSR course. However, their work goes beyond just translating, through the process they acquired software, graphic, and audio editing skills to build the training programs. This work is important because it allows access to training and other services in multiple languages that are supportive of increasing knowledge, safety and health.
