We have had a better week with the weather so hopefully it is starting to come right. We got a full week of training in and most of our games got played despite the holidays. It was great to see our First Kicks, Fun Football progamme running through the holidays to give the players that were still in town another week of football. They braved the frost and gave it a real go and looked very smart in their black Coastal football shirts, kindly sponsored by Butterfield Bathrooms. After taking some time to watch some of our junior and youth teams at Cuthberts, I moved on to watch some senior football. The CWCL team did brilliantly coming back from 3-1 down to go 4-3 up in the game v Nomads, eventually finishing 4-4. The WPL girls put in another strong performance in Lauren Dabner’s 100th game. Dabs scored in the 4-0 victory over Waimak to help celebrate her day. Then I went on to English Park where the MPL team beat Selwyn 4-1 to move in to second spot on the table. All in all, a good Saturday!

Our U13 team entered the Christchurch International Cup this past week. The team had a slow start but kicked on in the mid and latter stages to finish the tournament in 5th place. We feature the team in the Team Focus section of this Newsletter.

This Saturday we say a special congratulations to Anthony ‘Macca’ Jones. Macca currently has 149 appearances for the club and will be hoping to notch up the 150 when the MPL team play Christchurch United at CFC, 2.45pm KO. Macca has a tremendous football brain and can play in a multitude of positions and do a great job wherever he is asked to play, a rarity in the modern game. Well done Macca and we all hope to see you continue to grace the field and join the 200 club in the future.

This week we focus on our U13 CUDL and CWCL Teams.

The U13’s have had a good season so far competing at the highest level Mainland has to offer, the Canterbury United Development League (CUDL). I have been impressed with how the boys have performed in the league coming up against much bigger and physically stronger opposition. The team are physically one of the smallest in the league but make up for it in technical ability and attitude and compete in every game. The experience they are getting in this grade will serve them well as they get older and I look forward to seeing them progress.

The team entered the Christchurch International Cup this week playing some really good football, finishing strong in 5th place with wins over SAS, Cashmere Tech and Nomads. Good job by coach Warren Dunnick, manager Alistair Sim and all the players. It was also great to see all the support the team got from their family and friends. The boys play away at Selwyn on Saturday, 9.15am at Foster Park

Our Canterbury Women’s Championship League (CWCL) team is in its second year and after a hard start have come good this season playing some good football and picking up points. The team is coached by UC student Ahmad Yosef who is in his first year with the team and is extremely dedicated to helping the players develop as individuals and as a team. The side has a mixture of young and experienced players and  is captained for a second season by Stephanie Barbier. This week the girls take on Universities at Ilam Fields, 10.15 KO.

Team photos will take place on Tuesday 4th August at the Linfield Clubrooms. The team coach/manager will be informed of your team’s timeslot soon.

First Kicks Fun Football group photos will take place on Saturday 25th July.
