Not-so-small act of kindness. Nine-year-old Kamryn Johnson and five of her friends were looking for something to do during quarantine. They started selling bracelets, but instead of keeping the money for themselves, they decided to help others. "Kamryn & Friends: Bracelets for Unity and Justice" has since raised $100,000 to help those trying to get back on their feet. Proof that you don't have to be an adult to change the world. Let there be surf. MacGillivray Freeman Films was founded on surf films. Between the years of 1966 and 1972, young company founders Greg MacGillivray and Jim Freeman traveled the globe to capture the sport and culture of the burgeoning world of surfing. They made more than 10 acclaimed surf films but none as great as Five Summer Stories, released nearly 50 years ago. “Because Jim and I were getting so busy doing commercials and Hollywood projects, we knew this was going to be our last surf movie,” says Greg MacGillivray. “So we were determined to treat the audience to something special.” With an innovative stereophonic sound system and ultra-slow-motion cinematography, the film broke new artistic ground for surf films of the day, becoming an instant cult classic. In a recent story, Surfline called it “not merely a great surf movie, but the greatest surf movie ever made.” Audiences can now stream Five Summer Stories as part of Surfline’s Surf Cinema Sundays.
