The Week That Was: A Cornucopia of Aural Delight
Intern Matt! Fan Mail! Too Much Joy! New from New Zealand!
Mon. April 20 - We checked in with Intern Matt up in Ottawa (it's the capital ya know) to see how he has holding up amidst the stay-at-home orders. We talked about the things that are keeping us semi-sane: music, movies and of course, beer.
Tue. April 21 - The amazing Barret Ries always gets the grey matter firing when he appears on the show as Patron -- or anytime! Back on episode 762, he discussed bands he used to like (ok, love), but fell out of love with. Our listeners had plenty to say about this. Intern Matt, fittingly, joins us to go through the correspondence.
Wed. April 22 - On a tremendously fun episode (love to do more of this kind of thing, hint hint), the incredible Paul Trap sent a CD to Intern Sam. Sam spun it up and gave us his impressions. As Tim Quirk himself — the leader of Too Much Joy — tweeted: "Some folks who never heard it before listen to an old Too Much Joy album, and don't hate it!"
Thur. April 23 - We cracked open the mailbags to find correspondence from Bill Mulligan, Hunter Bennett, Jay Ignacio, Kevin Clement and Kurt Gallagher. Topics include African Music, Counting Crows and Crime Songs. Hit play!
Fri. April 24 - Today, Patron Nick Scalera joins us to wrap up the week with a fresh-as-morning-dew update on current New Zealand music. And we're not just talking Flying Nun either, peoples. Nick is an authority on all things NZ and we're not just saying that cause we like him.

I discovered “Rockin’ the Suburbs” when … my thirtysomething son Eric put me onto it.
My favorite artists are … Neil Young, Todd Rundgren, Brian Wilson, Melissa Etheridge, Patti Smith, Ozark Mountain Daredevils…and a few hundred more.

The last record I bought was … Trust in the Life Force of the Deep Mystery by The Comet is Coming.
The first concert I saw was … Chase (remember “Get it On”?), at Wessman Arena in Superior WI, 1971.
The last concert I saw was … Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers at the Dakota in Minneapolis, March 2020.
The best concert I saw was … BoDeans at the Pantages in Minneapolis, New Year’s Eve 2007
I play … the harmonica, with my granddaughter Ida.
I am drinking … Willie’s Alloa Scotch Ale from South Shore Brewery in Washburn WI.

Who's That Band in That Movie?
Patrick has continued watching movies at a rate that some (including those who live with him) might have already called "troubling." And just like on the podcast, he's ready to turn his unhealthy obsession into something fun for the whole family! (Although the family in question who allow Patrick to live with them have grown quite tired of him replying to every question he's asked with "If I had a milkshake and you had a milkshake and I have straw...")
The premise is simple: Take a look at the screenshot below and try to identify the artist and the movie it comes from.
As pointed out by several astute listeners, email is not delivered at an equal rate, so instead of the first person to email patrick@suburbspod.com and correctly identify 1). The artist and 2.) the movie in which they appear, simply email patrick@suburbspod.com with your answers and we'll hold a random drawing in which one correct answer-er will (maybe) pick up some (cool) random stuff from Patrick's record room. Answers are due by 9am, Tuesday, April 28.

Although probably best known as the other driving force behind the Raconteurs, power popster Benson has been putting out smart and well-crafted albums on his own since the mid-’90s. Now on Jack White’s label as a solo artist, let's hope the association brings more attention to this talented artist.
Danzig - Danzig Sings Elvis (Cleopatra)
We think the title says it all.
Trivium - What the Dead Men Say (Roadrunner)
Thrashy and hooky, this metal band seems intent on perfecting the form for the 21st century. Their ninth album is a move in that direction.
Lucinda Williams - Good Souls Better Angels (Highway 20/Thirty Tigers)
The godmother of Americana leans hard into that “three chords and the truth” aesthetic. On her 14th album, she calls out the powers that be for the ills they have brought us.
X - Alphabetland (Fat Possum)
The greatest American rock band? Perhaps. It’s been 35 years since the classic lineup of John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake put out an album. So not everything in 2020 is bad news..
