What is Blue Light??
Blue Light is a component of light that comes from many common sources. There is concern over the long-term effects of blue light on the eye. Working from home, more computer computer, binge watching your favorite shows and checking social media frequently have increased our blue light exposure during the pandemic
Early research shows that too much exposure to blue light could lead to:
Digital eyestrain: Blue light from computer screens and digital devices can decrease contrast leading to eyestrain.
Retina damage: Studies suggest that continued exposure to blue light over time could lead to damaged retinal cells. This can cause vision problems like age-related macular degeneration.
Sources of blue light include:
Computer monitors, smart phones, and tablet screens
Fluorescent light, CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs, LED light, Flat screen LED televisions
There is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure because of the close proximity of the screens and the length of time spent looking at them. According to a recent study,
children’s eyes absorb more blue light than adults from digital device screens.
You can also have your eyeglasses coated with an anti-reflective coating, use blue light filters on your computer or other screen and use special computer glasses [readilly available online]. There are several Apps that decrease the amount on your phone screen.
