An Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 herd immunity requires at a minimum 60% and more likely 70-80% of the herd infected. We are even in hot zones like NYC at best establishments have only 20% population infected. To stop the non pharmaceutical interventions NPIs ie. masks, social distancing, frequent hand washing, prohibition of all social events, etc, would result in an overwhelmed health care system and devastating loss of life.

If 60% of the US 320 Million population become infected that would equal 192M. If only 15% become critically ill that would equal 28.8M. If the final case fatal rate is only 2% for COVID-19 that would equal 576,000 deaths. That does not seem far fetched when now our US COVID-19 deaths have already exceeded nearly 10% of that number (with >50,000 deaths). That is with less than 90 days of disease activity in the country!

Allowing the virus to burn through the population would weigh heavily on the conscience of the survivors. It would bring to question the wisdom and morals of our government. I hope the surviving population will effectively hold the government leaders and bureaucracies accountable for their actions and neglects.

We are looking at 2 to 3 years of disease activity with at least 2 more waves of the pandemic tsunami. We need universal rapid and accurate COVID-19 PCR and antibody tests, followed by an enhanced army of public health workers to oversee isolation and tracking down of disease contacts.

Our best hope is a vaccine or an effective pharmaceutical treatment which is at least a year away. Until then NPIs have already been proven to be the most live saving and cost effective means of dealing with COVID-19.
