On May 6th, 2020 all buddhists celebrate vesak day. This day is also recognized by the UN as international day of Vesak.
It’s the most important holiday for buddhists all over the world. On a full-moon day in May Buddha was born, attained enlightenment at the age of 35 years and passed into parinirvana at the age of 80.
In Thailand this day is celebrated by giving alms to monks and nuns and many lay people keeping eight buddhist principles for one day and in the evening almost everyone comes to their home temple to „wian tian“. For this ritual everyone brings lotus flowers, incenses and candles and circumbulates the most sacred Buddha statue three times, while chanting prayers.
Celebrations like that will not be happening this year. Social distancing doesn’t allow that.
I will give special online meditations on vesak day and I invite all of you to join. Doing meditation together and spreading loving kindness is the best way to pay respect anyway and all sentient beings can benefit from this wholesome action.
