A moment of gratitude.

This past Tuesday our City Council made an important decision to dedicate $600,000 towards an Alameda Strong grant program, and this was just one of several initiatives designed to help local businesses.  For this, we wanted to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you.  Thank you to our Economic Development Department, led by Lois Butler, who has been working tirelessly over the past month in support of our business community.  We are grateful for the work they have done to quickly pull together resources and policy changes that we hope will keep the doors open. We are especially appreciative of Amanda Gehrke, the staff member assigned to support our district, who is always there to listen, with a pragmatic ear, to the needs of our members and ideas we have.

Thank you to Sarah Henry, who has done a phenomenal job of keeping both our businesses and residents informed of the latest updates from both the city and state.

Finally, thank you to you, Council and City Manager Levitt, for your leadership in moving the grant program forward and advocating for building on this initial fund so we can help more of our mom & pop businesses.  We appreciate the time you have taken to host or take part in the recent business town hall meetings-- to listen, adapt, and take action as a result.

So, amidst all the frustration and fear of this current situation we felt it was important to say thank you to those who are working so hard to help.

You have our support I any way that it is needed.

Important Update About the PPP

More Funding is Available Monday, April 27.

Joint Statement by SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza and Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin on the Resumption of the Paycheck Protection Program

Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration Jovita Carranza and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin issued the following statement today on the resumption of the Payroll Protection Program (PPP):
“We are pleased that President Trump has signed into law the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, which provides critical additional funding for American workers and small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic. We want to thank Leader McConnell, Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader McCarthy for working with us on a bipartisan basis to ensure that the Paycheck Protection Program is funded so that small businesses can keep hardworking Americans on the payroll.
“The Small Business Administration will resume accepting PPP loan applications on Monday, April 27 at 10:30 AM EDT from approved lenders on behalf of any eligible borrower. This will ensure that SBA has properly coded the system to account for changes made by the legislation.
“The PPP has supported more than 1.66 million small businesses and protected over 30 million jobs for hardworking Americans. With the additional funds appropriated by Congress, tens of millions of additional workers will benefit from this critical relief.
“We encourage all approved lenders to process loan applications previously submitted by eligible borrowers and disburse funds expeditiously. All eligible borrowers who need these funds should work with an approved lender to apply. Borrowers should carefully review PPP regulations and guidance and the certifications required to obtain a loan.
“The Trump Administration is fully committed to ensuring that America’s workers and small businesses continue to get the resources they need to get through this challenging time.”

Outreach to Alameda's Business Community

Good Afternoon Alameda Business Leaders,

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty in our community with regards to health, jobs, the economy, and what the new normal will look like in the future. For our small businesses, the shelter-in-place order has been devastating. At its meeting Tuesday night, the City Council passed several emergency business relief measures that we hope will start to pave the road to recovery for our small businesses and restaurants.

Small Business Relief Grant Program
We are offering emergency grants up to $7,500 to retailers, restaurants, and other small businesses located in the City of Alameda. We will post an application and eligibility requirements online by close of business Monday, April 27, at www.alamedastrong.org.

Deferred Tax and Fee Payments
Business license and business improvement area fees are deferred for 60 days, from July 1 to September 1, 2020. The City’s transient occupancy tax is also deferred for 60 days, for the months of March, April, and May 2020.

Emergency Zoning Changes
We are extending business hours for food related services to 2am and making curbside pickup easier. Businesses can now sell to-go alcoholic beverages, food, and other essential goods. Please contact the Planning, Building, and Transportation Department for information on implementing these changes.

Federal Small Business Relief
Yesterday, we were excited to read the news that the House passed a new $484 billion bipartisan spending package. This is the fourth relief package during the COVID-19 pandemic and brings total federal aid to almost $3 trillion.

This package includes $310 billion to replenish the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which was previously exhausted within two weeks of applications opening, and $60 billion in small business emergency loans.

The PPP provides federally guaranteed, forgivable loans of up to $10 million to small businesses. Loans will be forgiven if all employees are kept on the payroll for eight weeks and the money is used for payroll, rent, mortgage interest, or utilities.

Funding is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the Small Business Administration will resume accepting PPP loan applications on Monday, April 27, from approved lenders on behalf of any eligible borrower. We encourage you to work with your local financial institution to prepare your application. Click here for a list of local banks that are processing applications for both existing and new customers.
