How are you doing on this auspicious morning? 

I am trying to re-focus my restless energy back to my actual 'work'. Indeed, taking portraits of myself in a box is not what I make my money with, surprising, right?

Some of you may not know, but I am currently doing a PhD project within experimental psychology, focusing on photography & aesthetics. Yes, that is indeed almost as cool to make your money with than taking portraits of yourself in a box.

Anyway, with respect to that PhD project, I launched a lockdown photo challenge that everyone (18 and older) can take part in, no photography experience required. The idea would be that people take an 'ugly' and a 'beautiful' photograph while they are inside of their lockdown home.

Below you can find detailed instructions in English and Dutch, as well as an accompanying image for the call. And yes, in using this specific image to launch my call, I am indirectly actually making money with taking portraits of myself in a box - cool!

Subject: Photo Challenge: Make an ugly and beautiful photograph while you are inside of your lockdown home.
During COVID-19 times, many of us are ‘stuck’ inside of our homes, confronted with the same visuals each day.
Perhaps this is an ideal time for a creative challenge that can help us get more insight in photography and aesthetics.
Anyone who is 18 years or older can participate. These are the instructions:
 
Send me an ‘ugly’ and a ‘beautiful’ photograph.
The only requirement is that you take them while you are inside of your lockdown home.
You are free to make whatever type of photograph with whatever camera or phone and are allowed to edit/post-process your photographs too.
 
After you send me your photographs, you will be asked to answer a short 5 minute questionnaire with a few follow-up questions.
 
- Send your ugly and beautiful photograph to nathalie.vissers@kuleuven.be
- with the subject line ‘Lockdown photo challenge for research’
- and label the photograph as follows: ‘ugly_yourfirstname_yourlastname’ and ‘beautiful_yourfirstname_yourlastname’
 
At the end of the lockdown, I will compile and publish the photographs anonymously (or with credit if preferred) in a digital publication, along with the research findings we can draw from them.

Tijdens COVID-19 tijden, zitten velen onder ons binnen ‘vast’ in onze huizen en worden we elke dag met dezelfde visuele aspecten geconfronteerd. Misschien is dit het ideale moment voor een creatieve uitdaging die ons meer inzicht kan doen krijgen in fotografie en esthetiek. Iedereen die 18 jaar of ouder is kan deelnemen aan deze korte uitdaging.
 
Dit zijn de instructies:
 
Stuur me een ‘lelijke’ en een ‘mooie’ foto.
De enige voorwaarde is dat je deze neemt terwijl je binnen in je lockdown huis/kot bent.
Je mag gelijk welk soort foto maken, met gelijk welke camera of smartphone en je mag je foto’s bewerken als je wilt.
 
Nadat je de foto’s hebt ingestuurd, zal je gevraagd worden een korte 5-minuten durende online vragenlijst in te vullen met een aantal extra vragen.
- Stuur jouw lelijke en mooie foto naar nathalie.vissers@kuleuven.be
- met als e-mail onderwerp ‘Lockdown photo challenge for research’
- en geef je foto’s de volgende namen: ‘ugly_jouwvoornaam_jouwachternaam’ (voor de lelijke foto) en ‘beautiful_jouwvoornaam_jouwachternaam’ (voor de mooie foto).
 
Aan het einde van de ‘lockdown’ zal ik de ingestuurde foto’s bijeenvoegen en samen met de onderzoeksresultaten en inzichten in een digitale publicatie samenvatten (jouw foto wordt anoniem gepubliceerd, tenzij je graag wilt dat we er jouw credits aan toevoegen).
