The  Official Electronic Newsletter of the Veterans and Descendants of the
U.S. 17th Airborne Division, WWII
The mission of the "Scions of the 17th Airborne" is to honor the service of all veterans of the 17th, and to educate others about the history and sacrifices made by the troopers who served in this division during WWII.

We strive to accomplish these missions by holding regional gatherings where troopers and their families can gather, and by sharing their recollections.  We communicate with our membership using this "Thunder From Heaven" newsletter, through our website, and on our Facebook page. Additionally, we collect documents related to the history of the 17th and make them available to our membership.

 President's Message
by Adam Coolong

Greetings my fellow Scions!
Strange times, indeed. I hope you and your families are healthy, and are taking steps to stay that way.
Today I write to you what is probably my last President’s Message. I’ve served my term as your president for the last two years, and despite the schedule upheaval that has affected us all, that term has come to an end.
I am filled with a great sense of pride, having been given the honor of serving as your president, and I want to take this last opportunity to thank you for the trust you placed in me.
I look forward to my continued involvement in the Scions organization in my other roles as archive coordinator and webmaster.
On June 6, 2020, we will hold our annual business meeting. While we are unable to do it in person this year, we still have business to discuss, and so we will be holding our meeting online instead. Details will be given out shortly that will allow you to join us, should you wish; look for that in your email inbox in the coming days.
At that meeting we will welcome Jeff Schumacher as our new president. He takes over my role in accordance with our bylaws, after serving two years as vice president. I know you’ll join me in welcoming him, and I look forward to his leadership—he is indeed beyond capable and will serve us exceptionally!
Please be well, my fellow Scions, and again, thank you.
Adam Coolong
President

Please take some time to reach out to these
17th Airborne Veterans

By Ed Siergiej Jr, Secretary

Our Veterans outreach team has been sending cards to the seventy three 17th Airborne veterans who we have contact information for, as well as to some of the widows of our troopers.  The current health crisis has had a tough impact on many of our veterans, who in some cases are not allowed to leave their homes, or even rooms. As tough as it is for all of us, it is much harder for our veterans. The following veterans have specifically reached out to ask us to share their contact information. A call from you would make a great difference in their lives right now.

In addition, we would like to find volunteers to stay in contact with our remaining veterans on a regular basis. In some cases they have moved, or are having health issues, and we are not notified in time to be of some comfort. If you are willing to be a part of this effort, please contact us at Scionsofthe17thairborne@gmail.com and we will pass on a few of their names to you. Remember how much we owe them!

by Ed Siergiej Jr., Secretary

Membership Renewal Letters have gone out to our members, and many of you have responded.

We thank everyone who has responded. Membership is the primary source of funding to operate our Scions organization.

This newsletter is a benefit of membership. We hate to take anyone off the list, but when a member has not responded in several years we will begin to remove them from the distribution list in fairness to those who have been so supportive of our missions.

Remember, we also produce a hard copy of the newsletter and mail it to our veterans each month at no expense to them. This effort is one of the projects supported by your membership

Membership dues are $35/year for an individual, or $50/year for a family, including children under 18.

You may renew your membership by check to:

Attention 17th Airborne Scions and Veterans!!

2020 Remembrance Trip to the ETO

by Jeff Schumacher

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well and being careful to stay that way.
As Scions of the 17th Airborne, from these days of challenge we look ahead to better times, and we are planning for our time together.

As many of you know, we have been working steadily since the notice to cancel the March trip to the ETO in an effort to put the show back on the road yet this fall - and to celebrate together in the 75th anniversary year of 2020, in the ETO.

We explored a range of dates from September through mid-November for a 2 week window that worked with hotels, transportation and other providers & participants.
Working with our European hosts, we have rescheduled the 75th Anniversary Trip to October 26th (Monday) through November 7th (Saturday) with flights home Sunday, November 8th for most.

The trip itinerary and schedule of events will remain virtually identical - just with new dates.

Naturally, this hinges on an environment conducive to travel, but our mission remains before us, and in order to have the opportunity to observe the 75th Anniversary in the ETO, we need a plan and that includes reservations on calendars now.

That’s the plan.  With 6 months to go, we have the opportunity to accept more travelers for the rescheduled trip this fall.  If you’re interested, check your calendars and advise of your intentions as soon as you are able.

I want to convey my gratitude for the many supportive calls and emails, and for your continued dedication to celebrating the legacy of the 17th Airborne Division.
Together, we will make it happen!

Be well and stay well.
Airborne...
Jeff
Memorial Day Commemorations
Although many cemeteries have limited access during the current health crisis, our members are working to place flowers on the graves of the four Medal of Honor recipients, as they are able. Scions Jerry  and Pat O’Brien sent this photo of them at the grave of Isadore Jachman.

Our good friends in the Margraten Memorial Group sent the following message with photos from this years ceremony at Margraten Cemetery. Where Medal of Honor recipient George Peters is buried.

"Normal daily life is still not possible over here, but slowly we're making a start. This also has meant that there was no normal Memorial Day ceremony at Margraten yesterday. A very few dignitaries, our King and the American ambassador to the Netherlands (Pete Hoekstra) and some others , were invited for the official ceremony which was live on national TV.
Saturday, 40 volunteers were allowed to read all the names of the soldiers buried at Margraten and those with their names on the Wall of the Missing (the American ambassador being the initiator). John Smeets, his daughters Janne and Fenne and me had the distinct honor to be among these 40 volunteers. With the 4 of us, we have read 1.0000 names  (250 each). Though we were not allowed to go to the graves and lay flowers, we could look at the graves and the wall. In thoughts, we were with all these heroes. Specifically with our 17-th Airborne Division heroes.
Lest we forget!

The last picture is of my home where we fly your flash today, Memorial Day.

Take care, stay safe!"
Luc Horck

Many thanks to Luc Horck, John Smeets and his daughters Janne and Fenne for honoring our falllen Troopers.

From Scion Mike Martinez

This years pandemic made it very difficult to make the 800 mile round trip from my home in the Mojave Desert to Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, to honor Metal of Honor Recipiant, Private Stuart Stryker, Company E, 513th PIR, 17th Airborne Division.

But my grandsons Michael and Jacob Martinez stepped up to fill the void on behalf of the SCIONS of the 17th Airborne Division.

So very thankful to you both... All my Love and deep appreciation, Papa..

Memorial Day 2020,

Golden Gate National Cemetery
October 30, 1924 - March 24, 1945

Stryker's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

He was a platoon runner, when the unit assembled near Wesel, Germany after a descent east of the Rhine. Attacking along a railroad, Company E reached a point about 250 yards from a large building used as an enemy headquarters and manned by a powerful force of Germans with rifles, machineguns, and 4 field pieces. One platoon made a frontal assault but was pinned down by intense fire from the house after advancing only 50 yards. So badly stricken that it could not return the raking fire, the platoon was at the mercy of German machine gunners when PFC. Stryker voluntarily left a place of comparative safety, and, armed with a carbine, ran to the head of the unit. In full view of the enemy and under constant fire, he exhorted the men to get to their feet and follow him. Inspired by his fearlessness, they rushed after him in a desperate charge through an increased hail of bullets. Twenty-five yards from the objective the heroic soldier was killed by the enemy fusillades. His gallant and wholly voluntary action in the face of overwhelming firepower, however, so encouraged his comrades and diverted the enemy's attention that other elements of the company were able to surround the house, capturing more than 200 hostile soldiers and much equipment, besides freeing 3 members of an American bomber crew held prisoner there. The intrepidity and unhesitating self-sacrifice of PFC. Stryker were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

Judy Foster Holland sent these brought these beautiful arrangements to the graves of Clinton Hedrick and his parents.

The Germans who had been party members were forced to bury the victims an graves were dug in a central location in the town as a constant reminder of the atrocity.

Saving Our History #25
by David Shortt

SCIONS, 8 May 2020, marked the 75th anniversary of "Victory in Europe" day, tyranny was defeated by free men of the Allied nations, including our nation’s very own citizen-soldiers; our Fathers, Uncles, Grandfathers. The US lost 416,000 Killed in Action and almost 1,000,000 Wounded in Action. 16,000,000 Americans (men and women) served in the Armed Forces during WWII and today a little over 400,000 are alive, mostly dispersed throughout nursing and assisted living homes, hospitals and a few brave ones are still defiant and at home, the average age being about 95....52 million souls were lost during WWII and millions homeless, maimed or displaced...Let us not forget what the men of the 17th did for Liberty, Freedom and Decency, and in the process lost 1382 dead and 4904 wounded...almost half the strength of the Division. The Division liberated Belgium and Luxembourg from the Nazis and was instrumental in bringing Germany to final defeat... Let us ensure they are not forgotten.
For historical preservation and sentimentality purposes we are highlighting the silk "Identification" Scarves or Panels, issued to members of the 17th on the departure Airfields in France, for the Airborne Assault at Wesel on 24 March, 1945. These were issued for quick identification on the Drop and Landing Zones, usually worn around the necks of the Troopers, or attached to their musette bags, they could also be removed and placed on vehicles. Most were removed after a few days in combat and carried in the uniform pockets, before making their way back home as a souvenir... The Museum has saved about ten of these pieces of history, identified to various Troopers of all the Division's subunits-here are three examples:

(L) Unknown Scarf found at Antique Store in Southern US, looks to have had a German seamstress stitch the information from Anti-tank Platoon of HQ/2/513TH PIR, includes Killed in Action; a poignant souvenir of  battle...

(R)  CHARLES LASCO’s Identification Scarf, from Cleveland Ohio, he was a Platoon Sergeant and a proven combat leader in D and G/194th GIR. He also was a Glider tactic instructor in Berlin during occupation ,while assigned to 82nd...

For many years, Trooper Bill Tom (194/C) was a major contributor to the original hard copy newsletter of the 17th Airborne Division Association, "Thunder From Heaven." After the dissolution of the Association in 2007, Bill began an email version of the newsletter, and continued that publication, "Thunder Mail Call" until the formation of the Scions Organization in 2011. With Bill's help, we integrated his newsletter into this publication. We were saddened to hear of Bills passing on September 10, 2019. We dedicate this portion of our newsletter to Bill.

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIER
by Isaac Epps

   The ones who went
   Were truly sent
   To do a Noble Deed;
   When evil showed
   They took the load
   In Justice, they believed.
   They heard the call
   And gave their All
And some did not not come back.
   They knew the chance

   But took the stance
   When Liberty was attacked.
   It Speaks of Duty, Faith; and Love;
   It speaks of a respect
   for Country; For Others,
   For the Right of Man;
   To forget would be neglect.
   On this Their Day

   We stop to pray
   Their Memory shall live;
The sacrifice they made was Life.
   What more can someone Give?
