Mindful Minute - Cool the Pizza

Mindful breathing is focusing on our breath as it moves in and out to calm our minds and bodies.

Imagine you have just taken a slice of pizza from the oven. Breathe in to smell the pizza, breathe out to cool it off.  Take several “Cool the Pizza” breaths.

MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is learning to focus on the present.

Research consistently shows Mindfulness

  • reduces stress

  • improves focus

  • boosts working memory

  • increases self-control

  • improves sleep

  • lowers blood-pressure

  • Increases immune function

Mindfulness is learning how to clear your mind and focus on the present moment rather than thinking about what we  have to do later or things we are worried about or what our friends are doing. It is an important skill to learn because it can help us calm our minds, for example, when taking a test or making a presentation, sometimes our mind begins to wander and stress.  Mindfulness allows us to focus on what we need in the moment. It also teaches us how to be in control of our emotions. By taking a minute to think about what we are feeling, without any judgement, we can STOP, THINK and ACT instead of re-act. We can calm our big emotions and focus and feel happier.

Now, let’s practice...

One way to practice mindfulness is by tuning in to your 5 senses.  Stop and think about what you see, hear, smell, feel, and taste. This allows you to check in with yourself and reset for a more positive mindset.
