LWVHC UPDATES
May 3, 2020

We are a people in a quandary about the present. We are a people in search of our future. We are a people in search of a national community. - Barbara Jordan

Barbara Charline Jordan was an American lawyer, educator and politician who was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives.

LWVHC ANNUAL BUSINESS AND
ANNUAL MEETING NEWS:

Please put JUNE 19th on your calendar!

Your Board met for its April meeting (via Zoom) and discussed at length how to accomplish our Annual Meeting this year in light of the current pandemic.  As a group, we committed to having the Meeting on June 19, but we now face not being able to meet in person for our gala luncheon. Our plans for the speaker, raffle, slideshow, delicious lunch and chance to greet friends are all out of reach, and we’ll save our celebration for a future date.

Your Board has investigated and researched via LWVUS, LWVNC, NC state statutes, Governor Cooper’s recent guidelines for corporations, Robert’s Rules of Order with guidance from Barbara Volk, and our own member-lawyer, Bertie Woods (please read details HERE.)  None of the advice we received suggested postponing voting on the four business agenda items, and so we are proposing the following options:

1) Outdoor Annual Meeting, in a place to be determined where we could see one another and maintain safe social distance ONLY IF pandemic conditions/regulations allow, to accommodate in-person voting on four business agenda items required annually in our bylaws (budget, slate, bylaws revisions, program priorities.)

2) A virtual meeting on Zoom for the purpose of voting on the four business agenda items by a show of hands or roll call and/or by electronic ballots.  We would record the Zoom meeting for our archives.

In both of these cases, we will be sending you information about the four agenda items in a separate email, as we have in previous years, within the next 2 weeks, so please keep an eye out.  Then we will announce 2 virtual meetings to discuss these elements with all interested members as well as considering/responding to any email suggestions/questions.

We welcome your input!  The LWVHC Board wishes to give our members a chance to voice their thoughts about holding this important meeting. And most of all we look forward to seeing you—one way or another—on June 19th: this could be our greatest turnout for a LWVHC event!!

Members only: please fill out this 3-question survey HERE  and leave comments.

The Untold Story of Women of Color
in the League of Women Voters

On May 6 at 7pm ET, the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts will host Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins for a webinar about her new book, "The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters." Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins was the first (and so far, only) African American woman to hold the position of President of LWV.  Her book explores the ways women of color have been marginalized and recognizes how their contributions will positively influence the League as it moves into its next 100 years. VOTING RIGHTS & ACCESS DURING COVID-19: General Principles Guiding LWVUS Positions  Find HERE the measures LWVUS supports to ensure accessible and safe 2020 elections.

Here's a Powerful Action You Can Take from Home

The challenges created by Covid-19 around voting must be addressed NOW to prepare NC for an accessible, safe election.  With an expected surge in absentee ballots comes a need for funding for high-speed scanners, printing, postage and additional staff.  In-person voting will need increased sanitation, protective equipment, flexible hours, additional locations, and more staff.  To receive the 10.9 million federal dollars provided by CARES to make elections safer, NC has to match 20%, but has not yet done so.

Please call or email your legislators to ask them to approve necessary state matching funds. All of us deserve the right to vote safely in November. Click Here for contact info.

HELP NEEDED
 by LWV of North Carolina

LWVNC supports the Southern Coalition for Social Justice which is looking for potential plaintiffs in a possible case to support easier absentee balloting in NC, especially the 2 witness, issue.  They’re looking for people who fit one or more of the following categories: 1) uniquely at risk health-wise, 2) will have difficulty getting 2 witnesses, and/or 3) had a problem with or were rejected from absentee balloting previously.  If you or someone you know fits and is interested in helping, please send us an email at communications@lwvhcnc.org
