COVID-19 RELIEF

Bad hair day? Snap a pic & donate to our #AtTheirService campaign to help NYC's service industry workers

Right now, our hairdressers, manicurists, dog groomers, personal trainers, barbers and dry cleaners—our lifesavers for all things beauty—need our help. That's why Citizens Committee for New York City has launched the #AtTheirService campaign to raise money for workers in the service industry. It's time for us to be at their service for all they do for us.

Here's how the campaign works:
  • POST A PHOTO of your current quarantine look (c’mon, everyone’s doin’ it) and make sure to tag us @citizensnyc on Facebook, @citizenscommittee on Instagram, and @CitizensNYC on Twitter and use the hashtag #AtTheirService.

  • DONATE what you would normally pay for a service to Citizens Committee’s small business COVID-19 response fund. Here's a handy donate link to include in your post: https://bit.ly/2KVB1vM

  • NOMINATE 3 friends on social media to join our #AtTheirService campaign and share pics and stories

In Brooklyn, API& is building community and addressing racial violence against Asian and Pacific Islanders due to COVID-19

In honor of Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we're highlighting API&, a Brooklyn-based group of self-identifying queer Asian Pacific Islanders who come together to center API identity by building community and healing. Established in 2015, API& is switching to online workshops amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As racial violence against Asian and Pacific Islanders increases, API& understands the need for a solid channel for online communications among its community members. At a recent online workshop, API& collaborated with a Vietnamese-American organization to create a safe forum for members to tell stories about individual traumas and ancestral trauma caused by war, poverty, immigration hardships, and interpersonal violence.

New grant program to help struggling West Side small businesses

Last month, the West Side Community Fund, in partnership with Citizens Committee for New York City, launched the West Side Small Business Grants (WSSBG) program to help small businesses experiencing financial distress due to the impact of COVID-19 in Chelsea, Hudson Yards, and Hell's Kitchen. WSSBG grants of $5,000 to $10,000 will fill gaps in funding by prioritizing businesses owned by people of color, immigrants, and women.

"Leaving small business owners would be a travesty, and we want to make sure that all parts of our community are as strong as they possibly can be," said Citizens Committee CEO Dr. Rahsaan Harris in an interview with NY1 about the new program.

About Citizens Committee for New York City
Citizens Committee for New York City’s mission is to help New Yorkers - especially those in low-income areas - come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Residents are uniquely situated to define and act on the issues affecting their communities. When provided with modest support, neighborhood and school groups can effectively mobilize with the assistance of grants, skills-building workshops, project planning assistance and an equipment share library. In 2019, we provided 596 projects with $2.3 million in grants and services, impacting more than 130,000 residents in 164 different neighborhoods across the five boroughs. Since 1975, we have promoted the spirit of volunteerism, local engagement, and social justice that drives our work. Go to citizensnyc.org to learn more.
