High Peak businesses urged not to miss out on grants

Businesses across the High Peak impacted by the ongoing Covid-19 emergency are being reminded there is financial help available to support you through this period.

The Council has received £29m from the Government to pay the small business grants and the retail, hospitality and leisure grants to businesses.

So far we've paid over £18.3m to more than 1,600 High Peak companies and are currently processing over 250 applications - but there are around 2,400 eligible businesses in the borough.

Claire Hazeldene, Deputy Finance Director, said: "We know what a difference these grants are making to businesses in the Borough so we want to make sure that all those who are eligible receive their grant.

"We are yet to receive applications from over 400 businesses that we believe may be eligible so I'm appealing to them to complete the form on our website as soon as possible so we can get payment to them.

"To be eligible your business needs to be registered for business rates and be in receipt of small business rates relief, rural relief or retail relief (up to a rateable value of £51,000) as at 11 March this 2020. Some businesses may be in receipt of full business rates relief and so pay no business rates but would still be eligible.

"We're aware that there are some businesses that have been in occupation within a business premises but have never registered for business rates with the Council. In those instances, we will require more information to assess eligibility and apply rate relief prior to approving the grant award. If this applies to you, please complete this occupation application form.

"And this is grant funding which doesn't have to be re-paid so if you've not yet applied because you don't want to get into debt please be assured you won't.

"We're here to help so please get in touch with us."

Please make sure you apply for the grants you're entitled to and we hope you and your families stay safe and well.

Grants proving 'life-saving' for local businesses

We're working hard to make sure the £29m we've received for grant payments is in the accounts of High Peak businesses quickly because we know how important this funding is.

But don't just take our word for it - here's what some local business people had to say:

Sara Wojcik, from Allison Park Hotel in Buxton: "This grant is life-saving - it means re-opening is now a possibility and we can think about the future. Without it, that just wouldn't have been possible."

Alan Williams, from long-established Glossop business Jakasta: "We've been here 25 years and, like so many small businesses, we operate on a stock-in stock-out basis so receiving the grant has really helped. It means we can pay our suppliers and without it we'd be in a mess.

"The help from the Council has been excellent. We had a call from them to let us know what to do, we pinged off the form on the website and the funding is now in our account. It's great!"

So if you've not yet applied, what are you waiting for!
