Plan to make the data work for you
April 2020

Welcome to our April 2020 DMPonline newsletter!

Our monthly newsletter will keep you updated about new features, functionality, and important days for your calendar.

THIS MONTH

You will find a summary of our March user group where we were joined by Michelle Harricharan (Data Support Manager) from St George's University of London, summary from DMPonline training, video tutorial on how to set up conditional questions and dates for upcoming online DMPonline user community drop-in sessions.

Making the most of DMPonline

We had a really successful DMPonline training course last week with over 40 attendees from the UK, Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal. Thank you all so much for the contributions. In the blog debrief, you will see a status update on the conditional questions and machine-actionable DMP features. We also summarise your questions and ideas. Some of these have been raised as tickets already and others are listed with questions to help us scope and prioritise the work.

Where to test? DMPonline-dev or DMPonline-test

When there are major changes or new features, we invite users to review and comment on these before we deploy. You may not always be sure whether to test new features on DMPonline-test or DMPonline-dev? Sam explains that there are a couple of differences between the two sites.

  • The DMPonline-test site does not have any of the custom (tenant) branding.  We largely use this to test new functionality for ongoing DMPRoadmap development and sign-off on it before we create a release and eventually deploy to DMPonline. This is where we are currently inviting your feedback on the RoR integration and other machine-actionable DMP work.
  • DMPonline-dev has all of the multi-tenant branding and styling and is our pre-production server. This is where we shared the conditional questions work last week.

Short summary from March drop in session

In our DMPonline March drop in session we were joined by Michelle Harricharan (Data Support Manager) from St George's University of London who shared with us their usage of DMPonline. Lot of their DMPs strategies are based on the way they work as an organisation. Unlike many big institutions which organise large-scale workshops and training, there is very much of a community vibe at St George's. It is common to meet for coffee to discuss ideas around DMPs, or researchers may just call Michelle to discuss the usage of DMPonline. They may start the discussion with the researchers at the grant application stage or at the project start phase.

Become our guest speaker in DMPonline drop in session

As majority of you already know, we are now running monthly DMPonline drop in session, and each month we have a guest speaker from the community. It is valuable for all of us to learn about how you go about research data management at your institution, to discuss your approach, ways to engage with the researchers, and insights into how different institutions and countries work. You can listen to our previous sessions here, and I would like to encourage you to take a part and get in touch with us directly via email, or fill the Doodle poll

Sarah Jones to move to new role at GÉANT

Saying goodbye to any member of DCC staff is always poignant even as we wish them well in their new role. But it is with particular sadness that Kevin announced the forthcoming departure of Sarah Jones earlier this month. DMPonline users will be familiar with Sarah from her work on the tool over recent years. The recruitment wheels are in motion and we are also involving other DCC staff in DMPonline. Patricia Herterich is joining the team to take on some coordination tasks.

Peter Smith shares how Sheffield Hallam University uses DMPonline

This month we are featuring a blog post from Peter Smith from the Sheffield Hallam University.

"As well as being a useful tool for us and researchers, DMPonline connects us to a supportive RDM community. I recently attended an RDM 'unconference' organised by DCC where I met with a number of colleagues to discuss issues as varied as using tools to automate data gathering, the problems of storing sensitive data, and the creation of an EU wide data management infrastructure."

DMPonline Tutorial - Conditional questions

As part of the DMPonline tutorial video series this month we demonstrate new conditional questions functionality. This allows you to set conditions on options in radio button or checkbox questions to skip a series of further questions or send email alerts in response to answers. In this short video we explain how to add the conditions on your templates.

Please let us know which features in particular you would like us to demonstrate and we can prepare help materials and add them to the user guide.

Days for your calendar

Each month we run monthly virtual drop-in sessions for the DMPonline user community where you can ask us questions, learn about new features, and meet fellow subscribers.
