Texas Children's Hospital Autism Center
and
Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics

As the public health crisis continues to develop, we have heard from families who are struggling with distance education and implementation of their child's special education services, from parents struggling to take a moment for themselves for self-care, from those struggling with behavioral problems at home and stress from new and ever-changing routines, and from families who are struggling with unemployment and just trying to figure out how to meet their family's basic needs.

We want you to know that you are not alone, that many of us share some of these very same concerns, and that our team here at The Autism Center and Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics is here to help connect you with resources, information, and support needed to help you through this difficult time.

Each week we are sending out a newsletter on a different topic for the week. You can view previous newsletters on our our websites as well by

Making Ends Meet

In times like this when the entire world is at a standstill, it can be extremely hard to make ends meet.  Whether that means having access to food, electricity, shelter, therapy services, or even mental health services, the inability to make ends meet can put a significant amount of strain on not only parents, but children as well.

Many community agencies are stepping up and offering assistance for these types of needs, but finding that information and sorting through the array of programs available and types of assistance can add yet another strain on an already stressed family.

Below we have included some of those resources that may be helpful in making ends meet for your family.

Mental Health and Support

In the last two months, you've become a full-time teacher and therapist in addition to your usual caregiving responsibilities.   Maybe you're trying to balance these new tasks along with the challenges of working remotely, and/or trying to keep things calm and under control while your partner works from home.   And many of the usual stress relievers - dropping the kids off at grandma's, going out for dinner and a movie, or getting together with friends - are off limits for now.   No matter what your situation, this is a challenging and difficult time.

Fortunately, community mental health providers and organizations have risen to the challenge and are offering virtual ways to help.  If you are struggling to deal with your feelings, or if you just need a listening ear, please reach out for help and support.    Remember, if you feel overwhelmed, hopeless or have thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else, please call 9-1-1 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Medicaid Coverage for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy

We have received many inquiries from families regarding Medicaid coverage of ABA in Texas. As many of you know, as of September 2019, Medicaid was required to begin covering ABA therapy in Texas. However, that coverage has not been rolled out yet as many of the administrative details are still being worked out. The anticipated roll-out date was late spring or summer; however, due to the current public health concerns the start date will likely be later than previously expected.

We will continue to monitor the progress regarding Medicaid coverage of ABA and will post updates in this newsletter as they develop.
