Update: The latest on COVID-19 in Colorado

COVID-19 deaths surpass 500 statewide. About 64% of those have occurred in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. The outbreak in the state’s prison system and halfway houses is growing, too. Still, Gov. Jared Polis all but commits to lifting the stay-at-home order on April 27, citing a state model indicating that keeping the order in place for up to four more weeks would be negligible in the severity of the peak. But Coloradans still need to take precautions.

Polis's ‘experiment’ begins with Colorado’s soon-to-expire stay-at-home order

The Colorado Independent spoke with a public health expert about lifting the stay-at-home order. He says, "There’s a big education effort that needs to come along with this. It is going to be very important to monitor compliance. It’s definitely a risk that we could see a more relaxed form of social distancing than what is the goal of this new policy. "

ICE must consider releasing detainees vulnerable to COVID-19

A federal judge ruled Monday that the immigration agency must evaluate and consider releasing detainees with medical conditions that make them especially susceptible. The ruling is part of a class-action lawsuit over ICE's alleged failure to provide adequate medical care to detainees.

VIDEO: When a visit to your mom takes place through a window

Indy Editor Susan Greene noticed a man standing outside the window of a room at a nursing home. That man, Skip Thurman, allowed her to shoot this video of his visit with his mother, Celeste, whose Alzheimer's keeps her from understanding COVID restrictions. That may be a gift, he says.

All Colorado schools to remain closed for the rest of the academic year

Colorado's K-12 students won't be physically returning to school this school year, even as Gov. Jared Polis laid out a plan for a partial reopening of many non-essential businesses, reports Chalkbeat's Erica Meltzer.

Teaching through technology: Rural teachers share challenges and triumphs of distance learning

Niki Turner, editor and owner of the Rio Blanco Herlad Times, reached out to a few teachers in Meeker and Rangely for their perspective after having been assigned a Herculean task: learn an entirely new way of connecting with and teaching their students, and do it almost overnight.

Opinion and analysis

Littwin: The question for Polis and for all Coloradans — How much risk is too much risk?

As Jared Polis prepares to reopen Colorado's economy, columnist Mike Littwin asks why our governor is so eager to go where so many other governors – and even Donald Trump – aren’t.

In other news, yesterday was Mike Littwin's birthday. He celebrated with lox and bagels, latkes, and matzo ball soup. And today is Tina Griego's birthday. She got a bike and may have celebrated with a hamburger and french fries. We love these two, wish them both much happiness, and are glad they were born.  – Team Indy
