Support for Children and Youth Living with Family Violence

The COVID-19 crisis is increasing risk for those living in homes where there is family violence. Social isolation, disrupted routines, possible financial or food insecurity, suspension of in-person schooling and ongoing uncertainty are exacerbating dangerous conditions for some children and youth. Together with Senator Stanley Kutcher, Dr. Wendy Carr (LLED) developed a comprehensive website of resources for K-12 educators, counsellors, administrators, and others. The initiative has received significant media coverage during the past week.

We Could Power a New Green Movement by Talking About Energy Change

Just in time for Earth Day, Dr. Gladwin’s article, We Could Power a New Green Movement by Talking About Energy Change, was published on The Conversation. In the article, Dr. Gladwin describes the polarizing effects of current media discourse on climate change, and suggests story-telling about energy change as a way to educate in a way that produces social action.

Active Kids Launches New Virtual Intro to Gymnastics Classes

During this time of physical distancing, keeping kids active can be difficult for parents. The School of Kinesiology's Active Kids program, in partnership with UBC Camps, is launching a new, virtual gymnastics classes for children aged 4 to 6. Active Kids is currently planning future sessions and would like feedback to help determine what classes should be offered.

UBCO 2020 Golden Apple Award – Dr. Peter Arthur

Congratulations to Dr. Peter Arthur, OSE, recipient of the UBCO 2020 Golden Apple Award. The Award recognizes Dr. Arthur’s dedication to fostering instructor-student relationships. 

The Golden Apple Awards are a student-led initiative to acknowledge teachers who support the wellbeing of their students in the academic environment.

Privacy and Information Security – Fundamentals Training

The UBC Executive has mandated that both parts of the Privacy and Information Security – Fundamentals training be completed by UBC faculty, staff, student employees, and contractors. Cyberattacks are inevitable and, if successful, can have significant operational and reputational consequences for UBC as well as for individuals whose data may become compromised. This training will help everyone mitigate those risks through proper information security.

Award & Funding Opportunity Reminders

Jacqueline Farquhar Endowment for Children’s Mental Health

Deadline: May 4, 2020, 4:00 pm
A total of $6,000 is available for this competition, which is open to faculty and graduate student teams. Each team must include at least one member of the Faculty of Education professoriate and one or more graduate students registered in the UBCV Faculty of Education.

John and Doris Andrews Research and Development Award

Deadline: May 4, 2020, 4:00 pm
A total of $6,000 is available for this competition, which funds projects that have an impact on the community and increase our understanding of Canadian education. All members of the Faculty of Education professoriate are eligible to apply.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Explore Grant

Deadline: May 4, 2020, 4:00 pm
The SSHRC Explore Grant distributes funds from UBC’s annual SSHRC Institutional Grant to maintain or strengthen research capacity and research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. The competition is open to members of the professoriate at UBCV, preference will be given to proposals that include at least one of the following: opportunities for graduate student training or mentorship; collaboration within the Faculty of Education; or collaboration across disciplinary or faculty boundaries.

Collaborative Research Mobility Awards

Deadlines: May 5, 2020 and August 5, 2020
UBC’s Collaborative Research Mobility Awards facilitate collaboration on timely research opportunities between UBC researchers in Vancouver and the Okanagan. Faculty members from all disciplines who are eligible to hold research grants may apply. The funding cap per proposal is $5000.

Bachelor of Education (BEd) Nominations for Awards and Prizes

Deadline: May 30, 2020
BEd teacher candidates are eligible for a number of scholarships and awards that recognize outstanding performance in coursework, practicum, and the BEd program overall. Course instructors and faculty advisors may nominate teacher candidates, as can the teacher candidates themselves.
